what turbo?

the front of my turbo is leaking oil:td: so now that im starting my new job im going to save up for a new turbo, which would be thee best turbo for the money? this is a dd and i do tow with it, im not looking to spend an arm and a left n*t and i figured while i have it apart i might as well change the stuff for the EBPV and also put a 4in down pipe on it,

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

or should i just rebuild the whole turbo? its leaking from the part thats facing the front of the motor,

Lange503 12-22-2010 06:56 PM

the garret is a pretty good drop in, just depends on where you wanna go with your truck really, and the part that connects to the intake manifold? or??

99stackedpowerstroke 12-22-2010 08:35 PM

the part that connects to the spider that drops into heads? right at that connection back is covered in oil, with the valley right below it has a puddle, the one thats on the truck is a garret, is that a stock turbo? just a good daily driver that is still good for pulling a trailer and im not looking at spending 1200 bucks ither, im not looking at goin more than fiveoo horse power ither,

Lange503 12-22-2010 09:14 PM

the stock turbo is a garret yes, but the garret i'm talking about is a dual ball bearing turbo (spools really fast) you wont find a decent turbo under 1200 bud, see if you can find a good used Garret 38r and that will be a good turbo up to 500

99stackedpowerstroke 12-23-2010 10:55 AM

oh wow, well that sucks haha, so what your saying is that garret is like one of thee best? or is there a better turbo for that price? cause if im going through all this work im not going to put a used one on there and a few years down the road i dont have to pull it off again,

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

how much hp this trucks pushing stock? does anyone know?

Lange503 12-23-2010 06:16 PM

stock to the ground is roughly 200? and garret is about as good as a drop in turbo you can get, if you want to go more expensive you can go the route of a Hypermax H2E, Precison Billet set up from Black Widow, Wide Open Performance has a few different set ups

99stackedpowerstroke 12-23-2010 10:45 PM

okay. now ive been reading and noticed that people say the turbo noise decreases from stock, is there anything i can do to make it louder? i like my turbo noise lol, and also when i buy one does it come with the inlet and outlet wheel housings things or just one side? are all garrett 38 turbos the same? cause i noticed theres 38r and just 38

Lange503 12-24-2010 04:17 PM

the garret 38r is the good one the ball bearing one, and its should be PLENTY loud enough for ou ha that thing is a loud beotch, and it will come ready to bolt in and go unless informed otherwise

99stackedpowerstroke 12-24-2010 06:58 PM

but is the 38r the same thing as the 38? okay cause i like turbo noise haha, and one other question, to check my EBPV can i pull the turbo off and put it right back on or do i have to replace seals or something???

Lange503 12-24-2010 07:14 PM

no its not the same, and as long as you dont damage the seals you should be fine

tollen 12-24-2010 11:27 PM

:humm: Just go back in with your stock Garrett...........$500 or ? Then decide.

99stackedpowerstroke 12-25-2010 06:14 AM

okay thanks cause i didn't want to order a 38 thinking its the same thing haha, and also, how much extra power and mpg extra am i looking at if any, and tollen I've thought bout it but if I'm doing all this work and money I might as well go better than stock cause I'm not looking gto do this twice haha

Lange503 12-25-2010 12:43 PM

ha yeah, with just stock injectors you wont see too much more power, a little but not anything like you will when you match a set of sticks to it, but maybe 1-2 mpg and a lot quicker spool up, just post up in the vendor section for a garrett 38r ball bearing turbo, they'll all know what ya want :tu:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

oh and a merry christmas to ya! :c:

riddick01 12-26-2010 05:00 PM

to throw in my 2 cents and ask a related question
im looking at gettin a new turbo (close to stock) with a bigger exhaust housing from beans diesel Beans Diesel Performance - 99-03 Power Stroke Stock Rebuilt Turbo (Powered by CubeCart) and wanted to see what yall think about it. also id say look at that one to...the price isnt bad came out to just under 1300 with wastegated and larger housing.

Lange503 12-26-2010 07:38 PM

thats not too bad, i think a garret ball bearing is only about 1400 though i'd just go with it if it were me, you can run it with stock sticks all the way up to 238cc hybrids

riddick01 12-26-2010 07:49 PM

everything im seeing shows is as being 1700+

Lange503 12-26-2010 07:57 PM

xtremediesel has them for 1500 i think, post up in the vendors section and see what everyone can do for ya

riddick01 12-26-2010 08:10 PM

one last question on this turbo. my truck is running PMRs and i dont have head studs yet do you think its safe to do this or should i hold out and stud the truck first.

Lange503 12-26-2010 08:13 PM

you'll be fine without studs, no worrys, if you throw in over a 160/100 then i'd start to worry but with stock sticks you'll be fine

tollen 12-26-2010 11:20 PM

Stealth II Big Oil or you won't see much at all...:jump: But once you have lifted your head and put a leak in your head gasket it won't be so funny HA,HA, I guess that's why they make the new head studs you figure? HA,HA

Lange503 12-27-2010 09:27 AM

you don't need big oil unless you're running a set of 530s or something in that order, plus those stealths are expensive as hell!

99stackedpowerstroke 12-27-2010 09:56 AM

thats funny tollen ive never heard of people lifting heads off a early 99 with just adding a turbo,,,,, and like i said im not looking for big power just a little more than what i got, i dont plan on new sticks or hpop, considering i just put a new hpop in last year

Lange503 12-27-2010 10:36 AM

you don't have to lift the heads to do anything really, unless you are replacing the gasket thats about it ha, injector cup, injectors, HPOP, springs, pushrods, studs, all that can be done with motor in the truck and heads still intact :tu:

99stackedpowerstroke 12-27-2010 10:45 AM

i think he was saying id lift my heads cause of power, i think thats why he mentioned head studs, oh and i know all that ive done work on a 94 and my 99, but ya im pretty sure i wont be lifting heads in my near future

Lange503 12-27-2010 10:53 AM

you can run around 45 psi on stock head studs, some have re-torqued them and gone up to 50, but if i was to go through that much hassle i'd just put new studs in

99stackedpowerstroke 12-27-2010 11:01 AM

and thats boost? im only reaching bout 24 psi now, and according to google my elevation is five71 feet,

OceanDiesel 12-27-2010 12:38 PM

I'm not going all out on my truck so I went with Bean's D-66 on my E-99. It whistles like crazy (some love that, some don't care), spools quick, and gives plenty of air for my set-up. I think it was right around the same price.

Lange503 12-27-2010 02:46 PM

yeah boost, and thats about right, i seen up to 28 with my edge one time lol normally its around 25-28, i wouldn't worry one bit runnin only 40 pounds of boost on stock studs, my buddy had a garret 38r, with some rosewood stage II's (160/80) on stock studs and everything

99stackedpowerstroke 12-27-2010 04:59 PM

ya im not worried im pretty sure if i get up that high people will be letting me know what i need to do so im not stranded haha, but thank you lange
