Low Pressure Piston Lift Pump
1 Attachment(s)
By now your stock lift pump is probably worn out, If you have turned the fuel up on your pump I can just about guarantee your fuel pressure is being pulled down to 0psi under hard runs. This cause extra wear on you pump and also does not allow it to advance the timing like it should. To fix this problem you can get a low pressure piston lift pump that will be set at the correct PSI and not need the regulator. It is a great improvement over the diaphragm lift pump the 1st gens came with. The piston lift pump gives you better pressure and should support you past 350HP, also if the diaphragm in the stock pump breaks you run the risk of filling your crank case full of diesel fuel.
Here are the parts you need and the part numbers in a picture that David BC847 took. Attachment 51146 Your going the need to trim the insulation off the side the block to make it fit but other then that its a direct bolt up. |
Here is a writeup written by David on how to install the pump.

how much did the pump and line cost you

And the pressure that this is pumping is safe for our injection pumps?
I just might have to do this while the motor is sittin on the floor. Definitely a good thing to do to reduce the possibility of havin to get under the hood after the performance mods. |
WITH THE LO PSI SPRING YES
So the FASS DDRP would be a good canidate fer my 1st gen:humm: or just go with something at the parts store:humm:
Depends on how much power you want to spend, the pump in the 1st post is good for 350-400hp

so if i go to dodge or cummins and order that pump with that part# will that be the low pressure lp, or will i have to do some mods to it? what kind of money to do the swap?
THOSE numbers are for the low pressure pump. There is a HIGH pressure pump that comes stock on teh 2nd gen trucks. Go to a Cummins dealer, be cheaper.
Should the high pressure pump be the better one to get or just get the low pressure pump. Im looking at getting big injectors and a new turbo? Not sure on injectors yet.
no the HP pump puts out WAY more than our pumps can handle "they" say that the VE can only handle about 15PSI I am running 22PSI on the one I am working on and it takes every bit of it lol
Takes it for now, your seal if not retained is hating life though.

Thanks yall for this very helpful thread!!:tu:
I just bought the low pressure piston pump and parts. There is some updated part numbers for the list of parts you need for the conversion. Low pressure piston lift pump - 4988751 (1) Fuel line - 3914753 (1) same as before Gaskets - 3939258 (2) Spacer - 3914284 (1) same as before Seals - 3963983 (2) |
where did you buy the parts from?
from Cummins
One of the vendors sells a kit that includes everything to do this swap for quite a good price. I just can't remember who that was. Anyone else seen it?
Ofi has em cheap...

to clear this up, is the lift pump in this sticky the same as the second gen, but with the low press spring? And if i get the second gen pump, i need a regulator? But in doing so i can easily up my press after mods or say... a p pump? :tu:
