silencer ring, remove or not
 

I took off the tube going to the silencer ring, I was going to remove it after reading some posts about it, then after looking at it, it seems it is designed as a radiused air inlet into the blades for the turbo

I would think removing it might cause some strange turbulence, in effect the same as as an air breather for a carb, one of the things we always did with performance carbs when running anything but a stack was to be sure to have a nice radiused "ramp" so to speak so the air would flow smoothly into the venturi from the air breathers.

like I said I'm not a diesel guy but air flow has to still have an effect into the turbo?

i removed mine, as well as hundreds of others, and there is nothing negative by taking the baffles out. there is also another piece on the tube connected directly to the turbo, and i removed that as well. the turbo is louder, the exhaust is louder, my turbo temps are lower, and it spools faster. didn't notice anything with the mpg, so i don't think it does anything for that.

you can also view this as a free way of making your own cai. if you were to buy after market, the cai that replaces all the tubing from the turbo is wide open, no baffles of anything of the such, so that tells me it's ok.

yup, but I wasn't talking about the tube as much as the ring, I see where the flow might be helped with the removal of the baffle (maybe not the curved one in the lower elbow as much as the piece that looks like a + with the small holes in there.

The ring that is held in the turbo with the snap ring looks to have been designed to help air flow more smoothly into the turbo, or is everyone talking about just removing the baffles and not that radiused piece? and I'm not dumb enough to have thought otherwise? BTW thanks for help

Some folks have experienced a slight reduction in boost pressure and even turbo bark with the removal of the silencer ring. It helps direct the air over the impellers on the turbo, and the only real advantage of its removal is you hear the turbo sing.

The baffles on the other hand, can go "bye bye". Cut them out or just drop a boost tube in its place .... all they do is muffler the sound of rushing air through the intake.

What is Turbo bark? and I assume they noticed the loss of boost pressure because they saw it on a gauge? I don't have a boost gauge in my truck, it is all factory so far..... b ut I could see removing the silencer ring causing some loss, BTW thanks!

People have been removing them for many years...no real negative affects. Supposedly the aftermarket doesn't install them.

I've noticed in two trucks I've owned that mileage in town dropped slightly. I ran the first one 200k and this one has 245k (not all with the ring removed however). I've reinstalled the one in my 04.5, mainly because of the noise during long trips.

thanks, for now I will leave the silencer ring in, although it would be cool to hear the turbo a tad more, I am more into the performance and mpg over noise,

That's just it, the noise. You have to speak up a little more so you can hear each other. I'd rather listen to tire noise, than a whistle. :humm:

If I drove local, I'd probably have it out...but driving for 16 hours at a stretch, and trying to talk on the phone...it sucks.

No gain except a cool noise lol
