The baffles on the other hand, can go "bye bye". Cut them out or just drop a boost tube in its place .... all they do is muffler the sound of rushing air through the intake.

Im not sure about this, so dont quote me but I have been shopping for aftermarket turbos. I was initially reluctant to remove the ring because of the (minimal) negative feedback. Looking at the aftermarket turbos none of which I have seen have a turbo silencer ring. Are you supposed to pull your old one and put it in? Makes me wonder if there are really any negative sides to removing the ring. I would think that if it were essential for correct airflow the aftermarket turbos would come with them as well or require you to use your old silencer.
As for the lower psi I cant explain, but I have heard lowered mpg...but I think thats from a heavy foot wanting to hear the turbo.

If it bothers you that much, then just leave it in and call it a day. This is a never ending debate on this particular topic. Its been debated over and over on other forums as well. There is no real clear answer to this. DC put in the "silencer ring" to silence the turbo noise, so customers wouldnt hear it. Some people like turbo noise, some dont. I found a happy medium (for me anyway) by drilling six 1/4" holes, evenly spaced, and put it back in. My turbo still sings, but its not crazy loud, especially towing.

I just took the ring out on my lunch break. I only got to drive around the block and never went past 35mph, but I didnt see any difference at all. Maybe after running temp and higher speeds it will be different, if not its going back in. Assuming an aftermarket intake may allow more resonance, but that wont be for a while.

And then there was the TAG...for those of you worried about air flow into the turbo.

I had a TAG for a couple years. Actually made a difference, especially for towing. But the plastic housing cracked in half, and I threw it away. I think its a great concept, but the housing material, being plastic, is quite substandard. The TAG for 03-07 CTD is not being made anymore. In fact theyre really hard to come by now. Id kinda like to have another one. I searched for a replacement, but finally gave up the search.

Just got to drive her...not impressed. the higher RPM seems to whistle a little louder, or it was just me paying attention more with my foot in the gas...I dont know. However, the spool down whistle is completely gone. Before when I let of the pedal you could hear the turbo spool down and it was fairly prominent...now its gone. Not that I give a crap, I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about with this silencer ring. Im sure different generation trucks are all effected differently and im sure an air intake, injectors, programmer would make a difference...but the ring is going back in for now. This fall I am swapping turbos and adding all my goodies. Leaning toward a compound setup more than the HE351VE with the controller. Not sure at this point. The whistle is 'cool', but I could really care less. I just wanted to see for myself.

It doesnt bother me, seems to bother other people more. As long as she runs good im happy. I guess if you want your truck to sound like a jet, go get a Dmax or stroke...ill take a Cummins rattler any day

Bigg Redd 05-23-2014 10:29 AM

A compound set up would be awsome for sure. You would certainly have bragging rights. I do like to hear a little bit of turbo music, but not too much. Im more concerned about my truck running efficiently, than blowing smoke and burning rubber (thats cool too but its not really for me). Thats why my mods are conservative. I rely heavily on my rig, so keeping it practical works for me. Besides, I have another toy to play with as indicated in my sig.:c:

If I remove my turbo silencer ring on my Toyota Hilux 2010 d4d would it affect my tune
