Want to Kill Drone
I must be getting old...I deleted the muffler and kept the kitty (about 5 years ago) on my '04.5 Dodge CTD. I love the sound, but the drone and interior noise is getting on my nerves anymore. What mufflers will kill the drone and interior noise but keep the Cummins sound / tone? I really don't see the need to do an entire exhaust system being that it is already 4". Just want to cut my straight pipe out and put a performance muffler in.

mbrp and delete cat no drone
|
any muffler will work

For getting rid of drone put on a resonator. A muffler will generally affect the sound, but drone not as much, while a resonator will help kill drone, but not hurt sound outside the truck.
Be glad you have a 4" and not a 5" if you're trying to get it quieter lol |

Who makes / sales resonators?
MBRP Diesel Resonator - Stainless Steel or Aluminized You might post a topic over in the Price Quote section for a 4" resonator and see who all sells them, and for what price. |
2004.5 drone
I have a 04.5 Cummins that I bought with a 5 inch exhaust system on it. Several attempts were made before I bought it to quiet it down. The truck is LOUD period. I asked a friend who has a dyno if he ever had done a dyno test with/without a 5 inch cat. He told me that he had not. I got to thinking about a 5 inch system on a 360 cubic inch engine. The WHY question kept coming up in my mind. I noticed that there is a real lag from the time the smoke exits the pipe after a nudge on the accelerator. This just means that the pipe is huge for the amount of exhaust gas coming out of the turbo. It is basically open to the atmosphere.
At any rate, after I installed a Suncoast torque converter, the drone really got bad. The new converter hooks up way earlier, and with more of a bite. So I decided to install a 5 inch Magnaflo cat ahead of a 5 x 50 inch Donaldson muffler. It is VERY nice. It is not stock quiet. It has a nice little growl to it and NO drone. and last but not least, if I go to a State that looks for cats n stuff, I will be ready for the emissions guy. 2004.5 Dodge 2500 4x4, Cummins 600, Auto, Shorty, 3:73 5 inch, Stock Tires and Wheels, Banks 6 Shooter/SL, Modified Transmission, 3 disc Suncoast, Fass |
i got my hands on a stock 08 muffler it uses the stock hangers and it is a foot long resonater it works great and didnt cost me a cent cuz all those guys with 6.7s are ripping out their exhausts just an idea for a cheap quality fix

Aero Exhaust makes a good resonator. I put their 4040XL on my '08 and it sounds great.
Cost is just under $200. -Kris |
Have any of you ever opened up a resonator? there's a reason people take 'em off...They're pretty restrictive. Me? I'd get a decent muffler, of a straight flow design.:argh:

they all start out "free flowing", but due to their design, they don't stay that way. they're basically a bunch of interwoven screens designed to trap soot. when the engine is running, it produces soot. the more particulate it traps, the less room there is available to pass the exhaust. you don't need to dissassemble one to understand it's function-simply look through it. the inlet / exit is 4", but it only shows 1" of light. in short, if you want it to breathe, don't add restrictions. (kinda like the "cat-back" exhaust-it's effect on flow is negligible, but someone said it would blah blah blah) don't take my word for it though- do the math regarding flow characteristics, and decide from there. also- the location of the muffler has a lot to do with the resonance, as do the hanger brackets. the factory uses the most convenient locations for attachment, not the optimal ones. lose the mount at the bell housing, relocate it to the frame, and voila........you can turn the stereo down a bit. this info is the result of "trial and error". mine is loud as hell to those beside me, but the in-cab noise more than acceptable.

seriously checkout someones take off out of one of the new 6.7s there are no screens through it, ou can hold it up and see right through it
|
I got a hushpower muffler and I really like it on my 06 short bed. Still have the good sound but sure helped on the drone. There is still a little there but not like it was
|
My '07 came without the cat and an aero 4040xl installed by the PO. It is deafeningly loud outside with the go pedal down much at all. Inside, dunno. Never rode/drove anything comparable make/model-wise. Does seem to drone under load, tho.

i have a 06 cummins with the cat and i put a glass pack on backwards sounds great and no drone and doesnt affect the air flow out the exhaust and glasspacks are cheap and you can get them at any muffler shop

Gut it? :humm:
Do they just look to see if its physically there or do they actually emissions test? |
yeah thats all they do is look to see if its there but my 3 yr old daughter like to sleep on road trips same as the wife so the cat helps keep it a little quieter than a full on straight pipe
|
over all I'm very happy with the aero turbine

I have a 2006 Dodge Megacab that I just put a 5" MBRP system on with their muffler and it has alot of drone while towing my 5th wheel. I've been considering moving the muffler up to just after the down pipe.
I think it would cut down on the drone as that is where I have been advised to place a resonator. Would there be any disadvantage to this? |
