my free boost
So I was at a wedding and was talking to my father in laws friend who is a diesel mechanic about our trucks and what I had done. I told him everything in my description and he told me to get a few more pounds boost to shorten the shaft on the turbo blow off. So I got out my spare turbo someone gave me and played with it figured out how to do it without taking it off. I just backed off the nut and put a pair of vice grips on the rod and cranked for awhile till I had it tighter. The results 30-31 pounds of boost and WOT instead of 28-29 I was getting quicker spooling less black smoke and probably 150 degrees cooler cruising at 65. I was running close to 800 degrees now it's around 600 maybe a hair more. The whole time I was testing I barely got it over 1000 degrees used to hit 1200 pullin hard easy
I am very happy with the results truck is way more responsive can't wait to haul wood this weekend see how it does.:choochoo: So is there anything bad that can come from this? turbo sounds a little different |
Pinch of your wastegate line and you could probably get about 35ish.
I'm glad your happy with the results your getting. Kinda risky just twisting on the shaft. There is a strong chance of tearing the diaphragm in the W/G pot. Sounds like you didn't, congrats on that. Try pinching off the hose, you'll get more.
I have an adjustable boost elbow down all the way isn't that the same as pinching it off? but I'll throw a pair of vice grips on later to see if it makes a difference.
I wouldnt of wasted your time with a hx or hy they both are good til about 33 psi, i believe.
Mine makes 35-36psi on stage 10 on the ADR with a plugged WG line.
any more than 35psi and your out of the map on the hx and just making hot air.

on a completely stock truck how much boost should i be making?? right now i only make 18 at wide open throttle..normal?
ya I got my truck about where I want just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to hurt it tows like a beast now
what is the highest boost that is safe anyways? i no that over 35 is pointless on my hx but i've seen 42 for a split second. explain more on this vice grip thing...i need cooler egt's bad
Does have to be vice grips, just anything to pinch off the hose going to the waste gate actuator. I threaded a set screw into my hose when I had the waste gate on mine. Used a couple zip ties, on on each size of the screw, to make sure it couldn't move around.
I was just sayin vice grips to test pluggin it off but my waste gate is plugged and the shaft is way shortened, the latter is when I noticed the biggest drop in egts

If there was a better gain with a shorter rod over the plugged hose, your gate was open, or opening too soon.
i already have my line pinched off i was talking about the original post about twisting the shaft or whatever? but wats this about shortening the rod? how much did it lower egts and what are other benifits?
yes I had my line plugged originally. What I would recommend is pulling the turbo off the truck undoing your shaft to the waste gate loosening the nut and screwing the end part down maybe 3/4 of an inch. You will have to pry back on the pin but it was worth it to me. That's what I meant by shortening the rod I just scewed it in. seems like way quicker spool time 2 more pounds of boost for me and lower egts.

I just finished putting a turnbuckle on mine. Went from 22 psi to 33 psi and EGT's seem to be much cooler:jump:
