Few questions on mods

Hello everyone,
I am a newbie on here, but my buddies have accounts on here and say you are very resourceful. I have a 2002 24v Cummins, and I absolutely love it. I just have questions about modding and other possible issues I am having.

First let me start off saying, that I have done some mods already. I put on a 4" turbo back exhaust, open pipe straight through. I also had the tranny sent out to Bullydog and had it built to the hilt. My injection pump went out last year, around this time, and thank the good Lord, it was covered under warranty, and the dealer replaced it. I also had the natorious oil leak between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump, and had the seals replaced, and no leaks.

3 days ago, I started to drive, and between take off and 30mph, I heard a loud "vacuum" noise coming from inside the engine compartment, and after 30mph, it would go away. Is this my vacuum pump telling me its getting tired? If this is the case, do I have to get a new one, or buy the $59.95 rebuild kit for it? And will this kit work? I would really like to take care of this before major catastrophe happens.

As far as modifying goes, what would you guys recommend to start with first. My buddy put the Air Dog fuel pump on his Duramax, and he is impressed with it. Should I look into this? I was also looking at programmers, and I have been researching and thinking, and I have been leaning towards the Mads Smarty programmer, any thoughts here? I have the transmission to hold up to whatever I throw at it, now I want to take care of the engine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:tu:

Well first off before you do anything you need a better fuel pump to keep your vp44 alive like your buddy has like airdog or fass or even raptor they all make good pumps. Smarty is a very good programmer you wouldnt be disappointed with it.

cummins602 02-09-2010 07:50 AM

Thank you "98". I agree with you. I have been thinking and have a basic understanding of how to go about modifying. I will start with a better fuel pump, then start looking into programmers. Let me ask this, with a new fuel pump and a programmer, will it cause issues with stock injectors?

busta 02-09-2010 09:49 AM

before thinking about programers or bigger injectors put some gauges in to keep an eye on things :w2:
smarty is great but on my 99 i had the adrenaline with pulse :c::pca1:

cummins602 02-09-2010 09:58 AM

I have a boost gauge and a pyrometer. I want to put a light on for the pump if it should go. How did you like your adrenaline? How did it work with the truck?

busta 02-09-2010 10:06 AM

it was awesome except for at the time they didn`t have the fuel pressure sensor working right:tu:
I would add a fuel pressure gauge instead of a light
that way you can see the fuel pressure instead of having a light come on when it is too late to do anything:c::pca1:

cummins602 02-09-2010 10:36 AM

Good point. Thanks busta. For future referfence, advice on injectors?

busta 02-09-2010 10:44 AM

I had rv275 injectors in mine but the stock turbo wasn`t happy with them:w2::c:

98dodgecummins 02-09-2010 12:09 PM

If you put a lot of power to your truck it is best to also put injectors so every thing flows better.

cummins602 02-09-2010 03:08 PM

thank you fellas...

your welcome.

The smarty is a good programmer and real fun but your money may be a little better spent on an edge comp or quad..wouldn't worry about injectors just yet..but if so 100 hp sticks are plenty on stock charger.. the lift pump and a fuel pressure guage are a must.. we cant stress this enough on here.. We've been there done that.. A must..all in all it depends on ur personal preference from here on:rocking:

98dodgecummins 02-10-2010 07:09 AM

yeah the comp and adrenalines are both good but with tem you have to tap the pump. i think i might get a smarty or jjust get a small towing chip like the quadzilla xzt+.

cummins602 02-10-2010 08:38 AM

I am geared towards getting a BD lift pump and the gauge. I have my income tax coming in next couple days so let the fun begin! :jump: I hear so much good things about Edge and Quad, how can you justify one or the other? And roughly, what PSI should I be ranging at with the fuel pressure gauge?

98dodgecummins 02-10-2010 09:11 AM

fuel pressure good to have 18 or 19 psi at idle then going to down the interstate around 17 or 18 psi then at wot dont get below 10 psi of fuel pressure thats the right fuel pressure psi.

Has this been addressed? The noise could be your fan. The viscous drive is locked up causing the fan to turn faster. Happens in my truck as well. Hope that's whats going on at least, costs less money and time.:tu:

01cummins13 02-10-2010 10:35 AM

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT GET THE BD DIESEL LIFT PUMP. once more if i may DO NOT GET THE BD DIESEL LIFT PUMP. it will not support a chip or programmer save up for a raptor or air dog or fass......... im speaking from experience. trust me this pump is nothing more than a stock replacement and a waste of your time and money

cummins602 02-10-2010 12:18 PM

Another user told me its my fan as well. It went away after the truck was really good and warm. SO what is causing it again?

01cummins13's, I'm not doubting you at all, just saw it and the numbers seemed to be close as performance as a air dog. What would be the major difference between the two? My buddy has the air dogg and likes it, I just wanted to try somebody else. But now that you mention no BD, I might just stick to getting an air dogg.

busta 02-10-2010 12:21 PM

I had an airdog 150 when i ran the adrenaline and had no problems with fueling needs for the adrenaline:c::pca1:

cummins602 02-10-2010 12:34 PM

Is your adrenaline with the little cpu read out on it busta?

busta 02-10-2010 12:45 PM

I bought the pulse with the adrenaline:tu:
if you buy the adrenaline make sure you also get the pulse
the adrenaline is awesome but without the pulse you only get half of what you could get out of it.
The pulse allows you to change settings on the tunes to what will run best with your truck:c::pca1:

Another user told me its my fan as well. It went away after the truck was really good and warm. SO what is causing it again?
Essentially, cold oil in the fan drive. It works on the theory of expansion and contraction, to the best of my knowledge. As the oil gets hotter, plates expand and allow a solid connection between the pulley and fan hub. Oil cools down, and the connection is broke. BUT, as the oil is cold and thick, it creates a connection due to friction in the oil, not the discs. Fan spins a bit, oil warms up slightly and become more fluid, releasing its bond between the plates.

01cummins13 02-10-2010 01:57 PM

Yes save for the air dog. I know when i purchased my bd diesel lift pump it said i could support up to 600 hp or something like that.........it might be able to im not sure but i know that if you put a box on your truck it wont be able to keep up with the amount of fuel it requires. with only an exhaust and air intake my fp is 10 at idle and about 6 when i get on it. that is not nearly enough for a fueling box of any kind.

cummins602 02-10-2010 08:56 PM

Makes sense with the fan issue. Thank you much.

Alright Air Dog it is. You guys have been helpful. Any other word to the wise before I start beefing up the truck?

RAW 02-11-2010 07:34 AM

Do your shopping on this site with the Request A Quote feature. I have save hundreds upon hundreds of dollars doing it. Only down side is waiting for shipping, but if you can wait, you'll save a lot. I saved $200 on my exhaust alone.:jump:

cummins602 02-11-2010 08:54 AM

Where would be good place to mount the air dog? Closer to the tank itself or closer to the engine compartment?

RAW 02-11-2010 10:06 PM

Closer to the tank. The design of these pumps, like most electric pumps, is they are a pusher pump. Suction is not there strong point. Mechanical diaphragm pumps are the different, as they suck quite well, but pressure and flow are limited.

Redneck GI JOE 02-18-2010 04:27 AM

im at about the same stage as Cummins602. im pretty new to modifying my truck. im getting ready to purchase a lift pump, but my main question is.... which is better banks six gun tuner or the edge juice? all my buddies talked me into the banks. its cool, i like it but im looking for a little more. as soon as i return home from overseas im going to purhcase 6" stacks and a lift pump. ive also been told that i should get new injectors and a torque converter. do i really need to go that far into it?

RAW 02-18-2010 07:34 AM

It all depends how much your expecting out of your engine. Regardless of how much, you need that lift pump ASAP. Injectors help out a lot. I put some 50's in, and EVERYTHING is better. Mileage, power, start up, and less smoke when cold. As for the TQ, the entire auto transmission in these trucks are weak. TQ may be a place to start, but getting the entire thing built is the best.

cummins602 02-18-2010 06:34 PM

I did homework, and still am doing homework. But I started with sending my tranny to Bullydog for rebuild. I got their triple disc converter. Weakest part in a Dodge is the automatic tranny. I put on a 4" turbo back exhaust, opened up all the way. Now going towards lift pump, programmer, and then injectors.

01cummins13 02-18-2010 06:48 PM

Congrats and enjoy my man!

Redneck GI JOE 02-19-2010 12:44 AM

great guys. thanks alot. thats the direction i was heading for. appreciate it.

Redneck GI JOE 02-20-2010 04:46 AM

one more question guys. im the kinda guy that has to go big or go home. so my question is.... whats the down side to 8" stacks. i was lookinat some 6" but then i found 8" and obviously since their bigger i want them. i like smoke and power. is ther a down side to the bigger pipes
