tryin to make power

i inherited a 98 dodge 3500 dually and i wanted to run bully dog triple dog on it...but a friend of mine says its not a good idea to run heavy duty programmers on stock injectors...do i need to upgrade my injectors?...ne suggestions for more power would be nice

Dr. Evil 08-04-2007 11:10 AM

First of all - WELCOME to the site. Lots of great info and guys here.

Second, is this a 12Valve or a 24Valve? In 98 there were two different engines.

Third, SSSSLLLLOOOWWW down a bit....do you understand the importance of guages? You dont mention guages or even the use of the outlook monitor. If you dont know much about diesels - heres the short and sweet on a 24V - using a programmer changes the fuel map and adds more fuel. Therefore, its necessary to monitor the exhaust gas temperatures with a pyrometer. This is necessary because the added fuel creates much more heat and if you dont have a pyrometer, you run the risk of melting pistons. You will also want a boost guage to monitor turbo performance and a fuel pressure guage to monitor the health of your lift pump. This is the absolute minumum that you will need.

Also, if you have a 24V you should also be looking at upgrading the lift pump.

its the 24 valve and sorry i left out i do want the outlook monitor with it...im going to get a BHAF and stacks too

Dr. Evil 08-04-2007 02:11 PM

Uh, ok...so you have an idea about what is involved.

Im not sure how aggreesive the bullydog box is, but I think you will be just fine with your stock injectors (for now anyway). I think you are much better off getting a fuel system upgrade and mechanical fuel pressure guage.

younggun2 08-04-2007 02:20 PM

any suggestions for brands or anything?

Dr. Evil 08-04-2007 02:22 PM

brands of what?

DBogo 08-04-2007 02:26 PM

gauges, autometer, isspro, diprocal there all good
bhaf, you can get them amost anywhere if you need a list of part numbers let me know
stacks, talk to grand rock
last but not least theres better programmers out there then the bully dog, like a smarty

Best to Prepare for the bombs , Is it an automatic?

And Get a Fuel Pressure Gauge ASAP Cause our Stock Fuel Pumps Suck and it will die and take your Injection Pump with it ,

Once you have a good Platform the Skys the limit , But if you spend all your Money on Bombs then Something happens / Breaks because of last of preparation , Then you have a kick ass truck thats a lawn ordiment , Mines been like that a few times its not good

Youll want a FP guage for sure. Seriously, it can save you a thousand+ bucks. I recommend Isspro (they match the stock guages the best), or DiPricol.

Get a 0-30 psi guage like this one:

http://www.dieselmanor.com/isspro/r5..._fuelpress.asp - If you go with Isspro make sure you get the EV (enhanced visibility) series guages.

or this one:

I also like the Stewart Warner Performance line:

unless I'm mistaken the only bully dog for the 24v is the torque dog, the triple is only for the gen 3's

Glad to see ya join up. Theres a lot of good info hidden in these threads, take some time and read through them. It will save you a ton of money by doing it now instead of later.

To answer the original question, you can run any Chip with your stock injectors, you just won't get the full affect of it. But as mentioned before, before you start crankin the HP, fix the things that are gonna be broke by doing it. Before anything else is done you need the Fuel Pressure Guage and an aftermarket high flow lift pump and larger fuel lines. The lift pump and larger fuel lines are what it's gonna take to keep enough fuel flowing to supply that chip without overheating the Injector pump. The stock system won't do it. If you have an automatic, you will also need to start thinking about the upgrade to it. As a stock unit it will not handle the full affect of even a mild chip for very long. If it is the NV4500 5 speed tranny, well at some point you will also need to upgrade it but it will hold better then the auto.

Better fuel supply and Fuel pressure guage, first things though.

bow2no1 08-04-2007 04:59 PM

is this an auto or manual??

younggun2 08-04-2007 11:33 PM

its an auto...i meant what is the best brand for fuel systems...what chip works best with the 98 24v trucks? and what is the best way to build up my stock auto tranny? i come from a part of texas where diesels are real popular and off road trucks r popular but people tend to follow fads without knowing wut they're doing...and i want to understand my truck...so pretty much everyone runs banks and edge...so i really only know the basics and what goes in the pages of the diesel magazines...so any information ya'll can give is appreciated...

DB Admin 08-04-2007 11:39 PM

Get the biggest baddest Torque Converter And put a TFOD TransGo Shift Kit in it Adjust the bands and consider the tranny done , I would go for a TST box you can always stack to it later , And Get a FASS Fuel System , Then Get some 100HP Sticks then look at a superB charger ........

younggun2 08-04-2007 11:52 PM

woah woah woah wut r sticks and by charger u mean turbo charger right?

DB Admin 08-04-2007 11:53 PM

Sticks = Injectors
Charger = Turbo Charger

Yep :)

Uncle Bubba 08-05-2007 12:02 AM

A lot of picking the right chip has to do with what you want to do with your truck. The Comp and TST are both high end torque, meaning speed. The Smarty works primarily in the low end torque ranges, pulling power. The advantage of the Comp and TST is that they both stack well with the Smarty, then you can have the best of both worlds.

Banks :puke:. He does make some nice stuff but way overpriced for what your getting. With Banks you payin for the commercial advertising and the name that comes with all the advertising. Banks could probably be defined as the founder of this high performance diesel equipment, but he has since been overtaken in quality and affordability. Just my opinion, I'm sure there will be opposing opinions to follow.

On the fuel system DeiselMinded is exactly right, FASS is the best on the market. Hope you got some deep pockets, cause they're gettin ready to be stretch tested.:yeah: Welcome to the wonderful world of truck poor.

DazedandConfused 08-05-2007 09:05 PM

Everyone has pretty much covered it. I run a Wicked Diesel Performer fuel system and love it. Very quite unlike the Fass and does what I need it to do. How many miles are on the truck? What has it been used for? If it has over 100k I would just save for a new trans. I've seen several install convertors and VB in there trans and they die. There are also those guys that install them at 150K and there trucks are awesome. It is kind of a shot in the dark with auto's. I had one and went 5 speed.

Andy

younggun2 08-05-2007 09:41 PM

its got over 100k and we used it as a daily driven farm truck...we pull everything from rice planters to cattle trailers...the tranny is pretty worn down...i planned to save up for a replacement ats tranny...the tst powermax works well with the smarty?

Dodgehunter84 12-08-2008 09:38 PM

I like my tst powermax with my edge ez but i'm going to get a smarty soon. my buddy runs a tst powermax 3 and a smarty really smooth combo.

justviper1 12-09-2008 09:06 AM

don't over look the quadzilla adrenaline as well! It gives you gauges and amazing power!

tearin_it_up_everywhere 12-10-2008 06:20 PM

I like my Adrenaline it does what i want it to do, work. I use my truck as a daily driver and a hauler for the 25ft steal horse hauler we have. It works just fine.

dukeboy_318 12-10-2008 06:35 PM

the edge juice is pretty good as well, the adrenaline is getting better now that theyve resolved the surging issues, button issues and what not that plagued them for several months. TST is very good, especially the TST powermax 3 comp tune that mark now sells. I know mark personally and if i had to do it again, id get the TST, I only got the juice because of the sale they had on it and the added features of the attitude. give mark a call at TST, TST Products, Inc.

cummins24 12-10-2008 10:19 PM

As far as chips go I would say go with the Quadzilla Adrenaline. This chip has it all, high idle, turbo timer, custom tuning, numerous parameters to monitor. If you want lots of smoke, mid range, or higher end power you got it at the push of a button. And the customer service at Quad is excellent. But make sure you get a fuel system first, thats where I screwed up. Modified or not that stock lift pump is pretty much a ticking time bomb.

Mr.Krabs 12-10-2008 11:01 PM

I had a Edge/Attitude,good box I guess.
They wanted me to pay like $120 to get a different harness to make it fit the y2k engine I put in my truck,so I sold it,and I've got a small set of injectors and a stock "ho" HX35 Turbo on it,it works okay for a work truck.

My .02 is that you should skip the stupid ass boxes and just get some turbo/injector power.(many will disagree)
And a boost fooler to keep your CEL from lighting up all the time.

01quadcab 12-11-2008 10:42 AM

I liked my edge juice with some 40hp injectors it ran very well. That combo put 354 to the rears with my stock hy35 your hx will run much better. The juice with attitude also monitors fuel pressure etc so it really saves on having to buy gauges too. I don't know if the quad adr still has fuel pressure monitoring or not. If it does the quad adr seems the way to go. But I would get a fass or similar pump on before any mods as it will save you money by not killing the injection pump. another thing that helped me out was going with amsoil sever gear in my diffs and gained some mileage out of it. haven't monitored any mileage since adding it to my motor though... been too lazy
