Replacing power steering
 

Has anybody replaced their power steering pump and steering gear. My power steering has been weak and going for quite a while and I'm finally getting frustrated enough to explore some aftermarket options. I found this article online and I really like what they did and said about this complete replacement setup.

Just curious if anybody has done something similar or has any other feedback on this.

Thanks for the feedback Bubba, this really does sound like a good setup.

I was doing some more digging on these parts (featured in the article) and went onto PSC's website. Couldn't find the steering box they featured there at all. In fact, there are no steering boxes mentioned on the website at all for 2nd gen trucks anymore. So I called and had a little chat with Kelvin (PSC tech/sales rep). He informed me that they are no longer offering that reman gear box anymore but that they will start offering a brand-new saginaw unit for dodge trucks that should be available in mid-January for about $450 each.

The pump is still available through PSC (PN 1490) for $200 and is described as a hi-flow pump best suited for low rpm diesel trucks in the article. Although the linked article doesn't discuss it in detail, the steering stabilizer brackets they used appear to still be available too (PN SB100K) for $170. The bracket is described by the website as eliminating side play and wander. I'm still researching available trackbar options but I'll probably look at fixing that while I'm at it and it looks like I have time to kill while I wait for a new gear box to become available from PSC.

I might start a post over in the group buy section to see if I can put together a deal on this new product when it comes available early next year. I can't imagine that I'm the only one out there that has suffered too long from inadequate steering control/feedback and is finally fed up with it. Until then, looks like I'd better not parallel park my truck. :dang:

Sorry about just posting links but there is way to much good info in these threads to even try to re-type it all out.

That info about the steering brace is interesting. It defies logic to think that a brace that ties together the frame would actually exacerbate flex and wander leading to steering box failure. You would think that the brace would make the setup more rigid and would be a huge improvement. Looks like I have some more homework to do while I wait for the new PSC box to come out. Come to think of it, Kelvin didn't volunteer to tell me why they weren't offering the reman boxes any longer. I wonder if they were seeing failures that may have actually been caused by the steering brace?? :humm:
