New To Diesels Need Help Please.

I have a 2001 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel. The other night I was driving the check engine light came on and the truck died. It would turn over but would not start. I read the codes using the key method and got p1693 and i used a scan tool and got p1688 can anyone help me understand what these mean and where to go from here any help is very much appreciated.

P-1688 is Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure. Sounds like your VP44 had died on you (VP44=injection pump). Do you have gauges? Fuel pressure?

Could it be a bad edge box or ecm? Could it be air in the fuel lines? I disconnected the injector lines to try and prime it again and I had good fuel pressure. Have not checked it with gauges

Check the FP. How long has the box been on? Is it a comp or an EZ or?

That code aint good my friend.

it is an ez, unknown how long the box has been on i bought the truck and it had the box on it says it was manufactured in 2003.How do I check fuel pressure? Where do I connect the gauges to so I can determine fuel pressure?

First things first.

Disconnect the EZ. Make sure that's not the issue. Shouldn't be, but checking is free. Check your fuel pressure at one of the test ports in the system. Even though you may have good pressure, you could have a roasted VP.

A fuel pressure gauge should have come standard on the VP44 trucks.

will check the fp and disconnect the ez there is no gauge on the vp
will let you know what happens

99% it's your VP,but try the other stuff....
Like fishin' says, there should have been a fuel pressure gauge standard on the trucks, funny to me that we have a "low washer fluid" warning light and nothing to let us know we are killing our 1k+ Injection pump.:argh:

My vote is on the VP.

jfd1708 10-07-2008 08:41 PM

on the vp test port how much pressure should I be getting? If the pump is not primed will i still get a reading on the test port on the vp?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

if it is the vp where is the cheapest and best place to buy a vp?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

is it possible to rebuild the vp? If so where can I purchase a rebuild kit? I seen one on ebay but have no idea if it is right also could it be the fpcm that is bad? I appreciate and thank all of you for your input and information it has been very helpful and I would be very thankful for more input and information.
