How To Make SMOKE And Lots Of It!
Hey guys, got a 97 ram 2500 with the old cummins oil burner...
The truck is just another play toy (definately no daily driver street rig)and i want to get this thing to roll out the smoke. Im not talking a little hoot of smoke when you stomp the loud pedal, im talking about blowing clouds of BLACK smoke that block out the sun for 30min! Also looking to have a little power behind all that smoke... I dont think anything looks better than an oil oil burner stopped, spooling the turbo(s) and pouring out clouds of smoke as it takes off like a f'n rocket! What do you figure is required for such an occasion? |
First off welcome to the site :hi::hi:
There will be some cummins fellas who will be able to help you out with that pretty soon. you could take a look at this hopefully this will help out some. https://www.dieselbombers.com/showth...t=turning+pump |
all you really need is a set a fuel plate to get the smoke also to kive it that kick get a set of performance injectors, fuel plate, governor spring and a turbo and you will be set
|
Throw out the fuel plate and gut the afc and she will smoke. Also make sure it has a good fresh fuel filter in it. I dont suggest doing this without at least a egt guage.
|
cranked the starwheel all the way forward and moved the fuel plate about 3/4 of the way forward and it really woke up the truck!
Dont have my gauges on right now so i dont want to slide the plate all the way forward just yet! Anyone know how much HP a 215 pump would be pushing with the stock plate all the way forward? |
if you just purchase a cut fuel plate like a #5 like mine you will boost the power up quite a bit also i just put in my #5 fuel plate friday at 1/4 and it leaves a smoke trail the length of a freeway on-ramp
|
Once i get the pyro in ill be grinding the plate myself, why pay a couple hundred bucks for something i can do in 5min and cost nothing? lol
Anyone know if these things will run pretty hot with the stock plate all the way forward? I want to try sliding it all the way but ill wait for the gauges if its known to be hot like that. |
|
no you wont get that hot with a stock plate

definatly get a pyro but you wont do much with a stock fuel plate
|
Stock plate full forward, probably adds about 50 hp.. You also need some wastegate control to get the boost over stock, keeping the EGT's in line. Smoking like a freight train requires injectors IMHO...
|
yes if you have a aftermarket fuel plate and stock injectors you will leak. i have a fuel leak coming from all my injectors from the amount of fuel through the stock injectors
|
Ok got the gauges in tonight!
What pressure does the stock wastegate open at for a 215hp motor? In 4th gear i got up to about 25psi and it looked like it was still going but i ran out of gear and road! EGTs were 1000, still got some room to play with! What kind of injectors should a guy get? Im not looking for a million HP, it still needs to be drivable! |
You could look at some new era 435's they are a fairly big injector and yet still streetable and they will smoke. Or you could tep up and get some ddp's they are more pricey but an awesome injector.
Adam |
I can get ya 435's for $470 plus core :U:
|
just go with the 370's there are all you need you dont want to go to overboard for the daily driver
|
hey yea just gut the pump, take the plate out, crank the star wheel wide open get some injectors an block your wastegate. on those 435s thats not a bad lookin price, about how much hp will that add? 150 or so?
|
Is your probe for your pyro before or after the turbo, if it's after 1000 would be pushing it a little bit
|
oh ya after the turbo for 1000 is way to hot you want the brobe befor the turbo and 1200 is pushing it
|
gotta be nice to burn all that fuel at 3.54 a gallon. looks cool with smoke, but i got a lot more $@ck with a nice haze.
|
probe is just before the turbo on the rear bank (apparently the 'proper' location)
as for $3.54/gal, i wish i pay that... Its well over $1/L where i live! Actually when i left home in Jan it was around $1.10 which is over $4/gal. Anyways, its still cheaper than the $1.30/L to put gas in my other truck or the $6.50/L gas for my car, bike and sled! |
definatly Dynomite Diesel Performance injectors. they are the best money can buy (however not the most expensive)
They won't smoke nearly as much as Marine 370's but they will also make a whole lot more power, and with less egt's. |

I agree Spend an extra few and do it one time. As for leaking. i have never had this problem. I ran the 97 for a year and a half with a #0 at FF. Maybe with 191 DVs and stock injectors. maybe stock 94 sticks cant handel the fuel the 180s and 215s can....

best way to do it for free... home grind a #0 plate, gut the afc, if you are just looking for smoke you can take out your injectors and bore them out yourself (or just use a super small drill bit. It will definatly be rediculous

where can a guy find 435s?
I was actually thinking about that before... Pick up some new injectors and drill out the stock ones to see what i could damage... |
new era diesel
|
what are these leaks that you guys speak of? also explain gutting the afc? thanks
|
guttin afc
there is a bolt on the front of the afc housin u take that out and drop out the afc foot, the deal that hangs down and put the bolt back in. Now yer foot control the fuel smokes somethin fierce off idle.
|
haha, this thread is antique!
Ive since had this thing smokin like a freight train :) problem is, everyone says haviving alot of preboost fuel stalls the turbo, i see otherwise. Im actually faster off the line and up top and make all kinds of boost with the AFC 'turned up' (slid forward, starwheel forward and smoke screw in). If i actually tune the AFC the way some guides explain, my truck is slow as hell and falls on its ass above 2200rpm and can barely make 25 pounds of boost! |
ok im going to get a 94 2500. im 100% new to the whole diesel thing. and i know this thread is about alot of smoke but im not looking for alot, but a decent amout. im looking for a really cheap, fast and easy way to do this.
thanks |
if you've got little injectors, then yeah you can hit it with everything the pump's got and it'll light up nice, but if you really start putting out some fuel, I promise you a properly tuned AFC will light the turbo faster
|
nozzles
If you guys are looking for the cheap way, dont you guys buy nozzles and have your injectors pop tested?
|
nope, the 12v injectors are cheap enough that you just buy the whole thing. if you start taking 24v and newer, then yea, injectors are hella expensive and you have the option of getting nozzles!
