Does it have the afc foot in it. Almost sounds like a gutted afc also. Granted I have stock 180 injectors but the 215 pump is maxed out on stock dv's. I did have the stock turbo on but I could completely control smoke and power with the afc. I would take the afc off and look at the foot, make sure someone didn't cut it off. Maybe tighten up the spring and set it at the rearmost position and make sure the spring has some tension on it.

Most of these I've been around you can set fuel back enough to make them a pig even with a maxed out pump.

Install a fuel plate.. I'd go #10

It comes with a fitting that will increase boost.
Check all of your boots, make sure they are in good condition, sounds like you have a boost leak.

I'll play with the smoke screw after work today. No one around here has the socket for the dv's, where can i pick one up? The air to air boots have been upgraded to blue silicone boots and everything seems tight with no leak to be found. This is my first diesel so i am a little apprehensive to tear into the pump. i'll post tonight and let ya guys know how far i go and what i find out. Thanks for the pointer and all the help!

bout any diesel place on the webside. should be around $20 and dont be scared of DV's they are way easy to take out and replace and all you would need to do is take a look at 1! its easy

I took my air piping out to rebuild my vacuum pump. I noticed the boots and tube were oily. I removed the air filter and inlet tube to look at the turbo and found I could move the wheel In out and side to side. It doesnt hit the housing but it is wiggley. Could the turbo be on its way out and thats taking more to spool it?

wiggly is ok. up and down is ok but in and out isnt good. the oil from your engine will fill the journal bearing when driving and take the up/down slop out. its suppost to be like that, but the in and out means you will prolly need a turbo sooner than later. and still prolly not making a noticable difference in spool times. it will wheen it lets go though.

is your egt sensor pre or post turbo? makes a couple hundred degree difference. strange you put out so much smoke and yet your egts are so low..

check your timing since putting the injectors in? might be out of whack. or if the previous owner put them in ask him if they set the timing before or after installing the injectors.

The probe is pre turbo but i had to re wire the gauges. They were just jammed in between fuses and had bad grounds. I havent had a chance to run it since i did it because im waiting on vac pump parts. Im hoping that the previous owner didnt hurt the engine towing or rodding on it not knowing the egts....:argh: The engine doesnt knock or tick though. Thinking about having the compression checked. Would you guys have it done, or am i worrying to much? After the vac pump parts come in i'll get it together and turn the smoke screw out like turbo 2332 said.

Im just guessing but i think the timing and injectors were done at the same time.

Well guys i got the vac pump back and started playing. I removed all the boots to check for cracks, tried to look at the intercooler for cracks and found nothing. I put it back together with a new air filter and ran it. I dont know if the filter made the difference or if i had a loose clamp but it builds boost around 1300-1500rpm now. Way more fun to drive in town and now the turbo SCREAMS. Smoke is easyer to control in town to after playing with the pump. Now the only problem i have left is finding out where my coolant is going...:argh:
