i am buying a 12v 1996 stick shift with 200k on it i don't need tons of power just a lttle extra and some black smoke any ideas, and could you rate the mechanical ability with it if its easy kinda hard, hard??

goin cheap aint cheap man. air intake 4 inch straight pipe. pyro/boost gauge. then the afc

Intake systems are not hard to install. some are fairly inexpensive. But not cheap. Ehaust systems are not hard to install. Same with guages. If you can wrench, you can do it! The only thing you might have to have a shop do is turn your fuel pump up! That pump is complicated enuff so don't go pulling on that thing. It all depends on what you want to do?
Like how much Power do you want? What type of abuse do you want to subject it to? As far as Black Smoke It is cool and fun, can lower your EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) in a race aplication but, it looks bad on us as diesel enthusiasts. It also shows a lack of efficiency. keep asking questions! Where you from?
Where you from?

Turn your starwheel some too! It's definately easy! :tu:

turning the starwheel aint always a good thing. just don't crank it all the way foward. it can stretch that spring and the truck can develope a miss.

You certainly can get some extra power by messing with the pump, and it isn't complicated. Do a search on sliding the plate forward in the pump. That and the starwheel are the two places to start. You can probably get away without gauges if you just slide the stock plate forward some. Any more than that and you'll need a EGT and boost gauge. Those are good gauges to have even stock, but strictly speaking you're not likely to hurt anything by just sliding the stock plate forward and cranking on the starwheel some.

One other thing you should do, REGARDLESS of power, is put a bhaf on it. It's a large air filter that's intended for some other application but fits on our trucks. It flows a TON of air, and because it's a paper filter it doesn't sacrifice filtering the smallest particles like some aftermarket reusable ones do. You can get them from napa, but at least around here, napa will rape you to the tune of like $85. I recommend you buy it at a place that services heavy equipment or big trucks. Many different filter manufacturers make that filter, not just napa. Donaldson is the one I use, and it costs me about $35 where I get it.

guages, take fuel plate out, put hose clamp on rubber waste gate hose, then you clutch will slip, so a new clutch is next

Clamping off the wg hose is NOT a good idea. Just buy a fuel plate/boost elbow combo on ebay for like $30 and dont mess with crimping off the wg.
