12 valve auto

How far can i go with a stock trans. The truck only has 120,000 and was a old man truck.

ArizonaRedneck 07-02-2010 12:56 AM

what are you wanting to do :humm:

jrad989 07-02-2010 01:03 AM

it wont take a thing. stock transmissions are for stock trucks.

rkadcock 07-02-2010 09:09 AM

It also depends how you drive. I ran plateless w/ 4k gsk and 370s for awhile before I started slipping my stocker, it probably lasted because I never felt the need to go from 0-100 in xx amount of time and race all the time, like some people do...

smokedout 07-02-2010 06:10 PM

well its a 95 3/4 all i real wanna do right now is put a #100 plate,GSK, and some 90hp 370'S, and tune my afc. Atleast until i start bankin again.

well my auto handle bein platless?

cummins95 07-02-2010 09:43 PM

hell no you put any more than stock power to it n she'll be cryin. might wanna use ur saved pennies to build that trans first

Like I said above, I ran some power through my stocker, and it took the 370s to finally slip it. What it comes down to, is how your drive it. If you yank the plate, and start hammering it 24/7 don't expect it to last long. Now if you take an easy on and screw around here and there it'll last to a certain degree but it'll still go out. Ultimately IMO it's the driver who decides how long the stocker will take the abuse. Just pulling the plate, and driving down the road doing the speed limit won't make your tranny slip, but if you pull out of the driveway and punch it etc, then yes you will have problems. With no plate, your tranny will run hot but it can be controlled. Like in town, drive with the OD off. It'll lock the converter sooner and allow it to cool down

My 96' has 210k miles on stock tranny, added a few turns on my p-pump and 200 miles later, Needs some new internals. He could not have said it better "Stock Tranny, Stock Engine" Build your trans first, Then Build the motor.:argh:

gone ropin 07-03-2010 01:25 AM

tranny first,,,,:tu: the torque converter will slip, and the clutches will burn,, also upgrade the valve body with a good shift kit or for the price or order a replacement, also the lower planetary/sungear assembly will need to be upgraded it's the weak link in the bottom of the tranny, have fun bud,,, i can say i have been there done it , got the recipts of the pain,,LOL:tu:

BlackCloud96 07-03-2010 06:24 AM

go get your tranny done first then do the motor i found that out the hard way and dont just buy the converter buy a dunrite valve body and put that in it doubles ur pressure and also acts like a standard best thing i bought for my truck so far THANKS VANNEST:rocking:

jrad989 07-03-2010 05:47 PM

im gettin a dunrite VB soon. from what i hear they are amazing. i am freinds with a guy who is best friends with tony dunrite so im gettin the hookup. i might do a whole right-up on it. should be fun to put in.

More than an intake/exhaust and that stock auto is gonna die.

Drothgeb 07-05-2010 07:17 AM

The stock auto will hold ok with a #6 plate, boost elbow and 3GSK, as long as you don't drive it too crazy. You only need to turn the pressure up 10-15psi.

I did that to mine at 75,000 and it's still isn't fried at 215,000, and that's even with towing up to 14,000lbs. The main thing is controlling the TC lock-up timing with a switch. If you don't let it lock up too soon, you can make things last a long time.

Even with my latest rounds of mods (400-450hp), the trans is still working, just can't get much of the new power to the ground. But that's going to change here in a couple of weeks when the Billet Goerends gets here:jump:

85_305 07-05-2010 09:50 AM

Wow impressive you've gone that long w/ a stock trans :tu:

lil red 07-05-2010 01:22 PM

Word up on the trans. upgrade plus you'll appreciate the engine mods that much more. I've had pretty good luck with my auto also and have beat on it but she's getting pretty soft.

12workinprogress 07-08-2010 04:26 AM

Atleast do a TC and VB before adding different plate, 370s and AFC. Then later when the cash is comming get a tranny and put the TC and VB in if still in good shape. Also 370s run hot so might look into intake and exhaust before anything.

DB Admin 07-08-2010 04:47 AM

Been running over 400hp and over 1000 tq for years on stock transmission , all you need is a nice tc and tfod your vb and done

12workinprogress 07-08-2010 12:38 PM

with all this being said about trannys lasting with a vb and tc. would it be a good idea to get a tc and vb from the same people you would be looking to get a tranny from? I have a tc and vb but i have no clue what kind they are so that might affect what tranny i get.

85_305 07-08-2010 12:48 PM

Oh the actual DODGE transmission itself is TOUGH.. industrial tough. BUT, the vb and tc are the only real weakspots.
