Good Place To Set Timing
 

I am in need of a timing adjustment and i am getting it done tuesday, but i am wondering what should i get it set at? buddy of mine has his at 15.5* and runs good i was thinking 16. Just wanted to see what ya'll think.

the reason i need timing is when cold (80* or colder), i cant take it above 1500rpm with out it missing and blowing white smoke, but once warm i had no troubles. also now sometimes it even does it when warm, not anywhere as bad. the truck has 294,000 miles i figure it is due for timing anyhow. Also it cranks over 2-3 seconds before firing(hot or cold). I figured that can be the only thing is timing, i got a FP gauge, new lift pump, new overflow valve, new injectors, 3K kit and a 0 plate. but what is really weird when warm it idles at 950, if i give it a little fuel before hitting the key it will fire almost instantly, so its not a fuel supply issue.

What do ya'll think.

I was thinking of boosting mine up as well. I'm at 14 now and am getting the pump rebuilt and didn't know whether to stay a 14 or try for 15. ?

15-16 degrees is a good place to start...

Make damn sure that the shaft is clean from oil.grease before torquing the nut down (use some brake cleaner to clean it).

How easy is it to change the timeing your self? how much does it usually run to have a shop do it?

With the right tools the timing is fairly easy to do. I reset the timing on mine myself, but that was about 5 years ago....... Like Doc says, keep the pump shaft and gear clean. Any oil or residue from a cleaner can allow it to slip again. Also make sure that you torque the nut to 160 ft/lbs. BTW, most people seem to shoot for 16*.
