3k govenor springs
how much time would this take like an hour or two just wondering and its just on the side of the pump just turn it over right
|
for your first time it should only take maybe an hour n a half. it took me that long because i was extremely cautious getting the shims out, but it really isn't that bad. pull the plug out of the side of the pump, replace 1 side, then roll the motor til u see the other spring n change it. what kit did u get? it should have instructions with it.

well doc you beat me to it :c:

:tu:

Also, there is a discussion here that also has written instruction of going thru the side.... I've yet to try it myself, but I will, eventually. https://www.dieselbombers.com/5-9l-1...springs-2.html I suggest buying 2 heater grid gaskets, before you attempt it though.... |
when you buy the kit it comes with instructions. to go on the side
|
Just for your information. Not all pumps have shims under the springs.

i thought all of them had shims from the factory :humm: just make sure there isnt any in there, there kinda hard to tell if theres any in there, they stick to the bottom of the barrel
|
I did mine, first timer, took me less than an hour. Most of the time was spent getting other stuff out of the way so I could get at the plug. I did mine through the side. VERY easy. Not at all as bad as it seemed from the pictures and warnings. Just have a good pencil magnet handy. Everything lifts out simple.

If the shims could be from anything, to mismatched, to none.... what are they for? And if it's done for balance. Wouldn't the kit make things unbalanced, which would eventually cause some sort of problem in the long run?

I believe most governor spring kits will have better matching springs most of the time. I know of one diesel shop that measures spring height to get the springs as closely matched before installing. Only real world driving will let you know how close the spring are matched. If I am thinking wrong here some one please chime in. |
i never seen one with out shims either, nor have i ever seen any issues after changing the govern spring,
well i take that back, after i changed the govern springs, sometimes i do have to bump up the idle 200rpms or so. but as far as that, nothing else. |
My truck idles fine but the issue that I have been dealing with is governor bounce while pulling a heavy trailer. It can cause a jerking similar to a weak throttle return spring.
