weight problem

I need some ideas about how to build a bracket to get some weight in the rear end of my pickup because i spin way to much when i take off. I was wondering if anybody has built anything for there pickup. i can't ever take off now without chirping the tires a little bit even in daily driving which i doubt the cops would appreciate. I was thinking of building them with tractor weights. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried a set of ladder bars?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

or a different tire?

zach_west 02-17-2010 01:21 PM

what do the ladder bars do? and i put new tires on

Uncle Bubba 02-17-2010 01:24 PM

What have you done with this truck that you can't take off without chirpin the tires. Only thing I know of that would create that issue would be an on the track use only drag strip or pullin clutch.

zach_west 02-17-2010 01:38 PM

i haven't done much the fuel systems tinkered with but idk everytime i take off now it slides a little bit when i'm not on it. and plus when i race i can't keep traction all the way through 3rd gear and i'm not utilizing any of the power i have.

Uncle Bubba 02-17-2010 01:45 PM

Must be a bear to drive when it rains. I think I'd start by killin two birds with one stone so to speak. Move the batteries out from under the hood to open up a massive amount of workspace under there and put em on the frame rails towards the back of the truck or in the bed. From there you could also build a boxed in custom rear bumper with a fill sot in the top and a drain on the bottom and fill the bumper with liquid, sand or even lead shot. This way you can drain it and get your tow capacity back when you need it.

Anything you do with tractor weights is gonna either take up valuable bed space or look like hell depending on where you mount it.

ladder bars keep the axel from wrapping and also pull up on the front of the truck and push down on the rear.

By different tire I ment someting taller and wider

12valvetater 02-17-2010 03:07 PM

X2 on the bars

zach_west 02-17-2010 03:34 PM

where can i get some ladder bars and bout how much do they cost. or can i build them myself. and i dont want to go taller on tires since it's 2 wheel drive and idk how much wider i can go and still pull alot of weight. and ya it's a bear to drive in the rain or on dirt roads or if there's a little bit of gravel on the road or just about anything lol. and can you send me a picture of a custom battery box in the bed i'd be interested in that i need to redo my battery cables anyways. I've got a rear bumper on it anyways right now made out of square tubing i guess i can drill it out and put plugs and liquid in there.

Uncle Bubba 02-17-2010 03:45 PM

Can't say as I've ever seen any pics of a battery boxes in the bed, yet. I'm in the process of buildin my own right now but it's a long ways from done. I'm buildin a tool box and across the front of the box, the entire width of the bed I'm makin what will look like a step that will have a lid all the way across. I'm gonna use that for a battery box and the rest of it will store jumper cables and tow strap and tied down straps. It's gonna fill the entire front of the bed back to the wheel wells with this step coming up level with the wheel wells.

I know in competition trucks it's common to mount both batteries under the truck on the frame rails. Your new cables will be considerably cheaper to put together if you put the batteries next to each other also. That cable's expensive.

Maybe try a different driving style?

zach_west 02-17-2010 04:00 PM

ya i might try to figure out something to do on the batteries. and i'll drive how i want if i break it i fix it so it's pretty much my choice.

monster12valve 02-17-2010 04:11 PM

sounds like clutch or tc is slipping:humm:

zach_west 02-17-2010 04:18 PM

the clutch is starting to slip a little bit but it's only started to slip this last week. it's been doing this over the last year like this.

Zack i know you better than anyone else around here and i would definitely say its the way you drive. How about tryin to take off without poppin the clutch everytime?:tu:

zach_west 02-17-2010 04:43 PM

I don't pop the clutch Casey. Oh and you misspelled my name :edit:. Anyway I've calmed down on the driving a lot. and even if I haven't then I still need weight for racing.

Uncle Bubba 02-17-2010 04:45 PM

Just a few minor corrections there.:w2:

Rocky Mountain Texan 02-17-2010 04:48 PM

put jacob and every fat girlfriend you've ever had in the back.:tu: i'm sure that'd be enough weight! Well i'm glad you've calmed down. o by the way. take your truck to the dealership. there is a recall for the throttle linkage and light switch. they'll fix it for free.

zach_west 02-17-2010 04:49 PM

my bad on that one i'm used to talking to him like that. but does anybody else have any other ideas bout weight in the rear?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i guess i'm heading to the dealership lol burtis motors in garden city owes me

Hurley 02-17-2010 06:37 PM

adding weight for the sake of adding weight is a poor choice, unless you are pulling/grudge pulling. have you considered adjusting your tire pressure?

zach_west 02-17-2010 07:02 PM

well i might do pulling to idk yet maybe i just want more weight in my pickup in the rearend. maybe i get on my pickup a little to much. i can't adjust them to much i have to pull a gooseneck too. hauling hay. so i don't really want to adjust them every couple days.

cumminsdad08 02-17-2010 07:37 PM

yeah tire pressure is a pain on an empty truck, you could mount a compresser in the bed, that will give you weight and the ability to change the pressure when you want. also you could try and cut some tracktor tubes in half and fill with dirt or sand. they should fit nice right over the wheel wells, and give you a couple hundred pounds. could also find a real large flat steel plate and cut out for the gooseneck. prolly be kinda expensive, but will get you lots of lbs.

tltruckparts 02-17-2010 07:42 PM

if you haul hay, what about just putting a heavy ass steel flatbed on the back?

adds weight, looks good, and makes fits more hay per load!

cumminsdad08 02-17-2010 07:51 PM

yeah that would work good, didn't think of that. 2nd gens look real good with a flat bed

zach_west 02-17-2010 10:01 PM

i might be putting a flatbed on it sometime my bed is falling apart damn dodge.

tltruckparts 02-17-2010 10:23 PM

best part is you can pick up steel flatbeds for dirt. at least where i im at i got a gorgeous one i sold today that was perfect for only 300 bucks with a massive headache rack

zach_west 02-17-2010 11:30 PM

haha ya i know where a couple are at but think i'm going to have a clutch first then some valve springs i guess its never ending. and i'm going to start building some traction bars in welding sometime soon

93_Fummins 02-24-2010 03:16 PM

I know I'm a little late on this one, but add traction bars for the traction, and a good heavy duty bumper on the rear built with some beefy steel...that way the weight is as far back as you can reasonably get it in reference to the rear axle. I did that on my '88 Ford and made a big difference in wet traction and "one tire fires"...

Just my two cents...:w2:

zach_west 02-28-2010 12:00 AM

i have a back bumper that ways bout 150 i'm bout to fill the tubes in it with something.

Whats with the cleaning stuff in the second pic, do you clean your trucks whenever you get somewhere all the time?

yehhhh but for anybody that doesnt have a bed cover or likes to use their bed... those would get in the way...the best way would prob to throw the batteries in a tool box in the bed..... just think of all the space under the hood :humm: :jump:

Thats a good friend of mines 2wd drag truck that he recently just sold.Yes,to answer your question there is ALWAYS a box of detailing stuff in the bed of my truck at all times, even in the winter months. We were at a local show and he put that in the bed when we went walking. That truck when it was raced went 11.20 @ 124mph on DOT slicks with a stock bottom end,no aftermarket cam, ported head, twins and a full tilt Suncoast auto.

As for the detailing obsession...
You probably have never seen my 98 12v at a show but if you did you would remember it.Many here have seen it in person and they can vouch for the attention to detail I put into my daily driver. When show season closed last year I added 6 more pieces of hardware for my basement with my 220k daily driver.I enjoy showing my truck as much as I do driving it and its even more fun slipping into a show somewhere the trailer queens go and beat them with a truck that see daily abuse. So yes,I ALWAYS have detail items in my bed and at times tsome of my club members say it resembles a isle at Autozone.

yehhhh but for anybody that doesnt have a bed cover or likes to use their bed
Those batteries and the fuel cell were moved there for one purpose, weight transfer to hook the truck when he launched it.They were not moved there for room under the hood, although now that I think about it that could also have been a reason. If you would have ever seen the twins on the truck you would understand.

megaram 03-02-2010 06:32 PM

Weight??

You did not say what size tires you have.
I would put something bigger than what you have, higher the better.:tu:

zach_west 03-06-2010 03:53 PM

they are 235/85/16's I dont really want to change sizes too much due to the availability of these tires when i pull trailers.
