retarding timing

what do i ave to do to get my 215 pump to not retard timing in higher rpms and how much will it cost

12vcummins96 10-06-2009 12:18 PM

the timing should be set it souldnt move have u set your timing

The 215 Pump Retards at rack travel above 19mm.
At 19MM it retards 3deg and at 21 it retards 4deg IIRC.

Also, If I remember correctly Smokem stated a while back you can make 700RWHP or more with 18MM of rack travel

you can make it so that it dont retard the timing it involves replacing the plungers i think with flat tops? ask 94 12valve he has a 913 pump that dont retard the timing i think

Barrel and plungers, depending on what ones you have installed, could cost anywhere from $700-1000 just themselves and thats not counting the time the pump man spends with your pump on the stand tuning it.Changing them is not a job for the backyard mechanic as once they are done the pump needs to be set and rebalanced....andy

If the truck is tuned correctly, With the correct parts combination there shouldnt be a need to eliminate the feature. As long as rack travel stays below say 17MM. Is that close to correct andy?

Timing starts to retard just after 13mm.

12.valve.hauler 10-07-2009 11:15 AM

so if you advance the timing to 16.5* then the retarding part should make no difference then or do you retard the timing when you have it set? i read before but i cant remember which thread it was on and i tend to forget alot of things

Smokem 10-07-2009 12:29 PM

Let's make this simple, using a starting point of 15° static advance;

13mm - 15°
14mm - 14.5°
15mm - 14°
16mm - 13.5°
17mm - 13°
18mm - 12.5°
19mm - 12°
20mm - 11.5°
21mm - 11°
