if you have to replace the gear why not just pull the 4 nuts to get the pump off?

I did some reading on this not to long ago ... the reason you should not add a washer to the stock plug is because of the rack guide. The plug holds it in place and if you put a washer in the stock plug it allows this guide to move a little bit. When the guide is able to move it can cause the rack to get stuck and that is not a good thing.
