help? track bar conversion

i was told at one time about a track bar conversion.
i believe it will make a 2003 track bar fir the 2nd gens?

can some one shed some light on this?

bow2no1 06-05-2007 07:36 AM

or pint me in the right direct ion for a good track bar?
my truck was made 2-94

i got a quote from the local auto store for $310 for a stock replacement

Uncle Bubba 06-05-2007 07:43 AM

I would highly recommend one of thes two sources.

www.lukeslink.com/
www.dtprofab.com

GRI 06-05-2007 08:35 AM

if the local store gave you that price they are ripping you off.
advanced auto or auto zone has a direct lifetime replacement one for $180.

I ran the DT one and was real happy with it. but for a stock truck I think its too much.
I am not a fan of lukes link. I think it is a band aid.

if I had a stock 2nd gen I would put this on.
http://www.solidsteel.ca/Trackbar.htm

but you would have to buy a 3rd gen trac bar. which would be $180 plus the cost of the bracket. or you can keep replacing the stock crap or spen $350 for DT or Thurens trac bar.
I will never recomend a Lukes link.

Thuren Fab likely ha sthe best trackbar on the market:

www.thurenfabrication.com

Likely the most bang for the buck....and you can rebuild it on the truck.

The Solid Steel stuff is really good too. But, they still use a rubber type bushing and I really think its should be polyurethane.

The DT Profab is another good option:

I agree with GRI about the Lukes Link...dont waste your $$

GRI 06-05-2007 08:48 AM

Thurens is a nice trac bar but there are two things I do not like about his kit.

1 you have to weld the bracket on. which isn't feasible for some people and increases the cost of it

and you cant adjust it with both sides hooked up. which can be an issue when your by yourself.

Don makes great stuff

I dont have a Thurenfab but I thought welding wasnt involved. Yeah, that is an important point for many people, including me.

Dr. Evil 06-05-2007 08:55 AM

So, you prefer the Solidsteel stuff Bill?

ndurbin 06-05-2007 09:07 AM

I have the Solid Steel 3rd gen adj. track bar conversion kit on my truck. Works pretty good, install took alil time to get everything centered back up.

But be warned if you have an early 94 like me there is no bolt on kit. The early 94's have a smaller stud where it mounts to the frame on the driver's side. To make any of the kits work you have to drill that hole out to accept a larger bolt.

GRI 06-05-2007 09:12 AM

I ran the solid steels steering stiffener and the craftsmanship was top notch.

I have seen the 3rd gen trac bar conversion and it was the same quality and everyone was happy with the results.

Thurens bar is also very nice but if you dont have a welder than you're SOL.

you cant go wrong with any of the 3 mentioned but if you're lifted the DT bar is my choice

if you're stock definitely the solid steel setup

yeah but it is nothing compared to drilling the two holes for the cross member for the DT bar.. lol

the nice thing with going with the solid steel or just replacing the stock bar with a trac bar from the auto store is that they are lifetime warranty and they can be replaced at no charge anytime.

Damn. I used to replace my stock bar in the parking lot and bring it in. LOL

bow2no1 06-05-2007 11:35 AM

i don't like the idea of drilling out my 3/4 hole
once it's drilled no going back..... i dunno why i would want to...

the local auto parts store is "car quest"
the next closet is advanced auto. i called them. it was only offer by one supplier. and guy guy on the phone was the manager and said he didn't want to do business with them and they wanted $373.

the closest auto zone is an hour away. the good news is it's on the way to my g/f's mothers house. i got there most weekends any way.
i'll give 'em a call and see what they say

bow2no1 06-05-2007 11:41 AM

nope auto zone can't get it

GRI 06-05-2007 11:45 AM

what?

Moog makes a direct replacement for under $200.

hold on I will do a little searching

GRI 06-05-2007 11:51 AM

here ya go buddy

http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1352573...ductDetail.htm

I couldnt remeber what year your truck was so I put a 2000 and a 1 ton.

you can redo the search under the correct criteria but it should br the same bar for 96 to 2002

GRI 06-05-2007 11:54 AM

oh yeah I almost forgot

"DURALAST IS BUilT TO LAST!"

bow2no1 06-05-2007 12:03 PM

yeah there's some type weird production date thing

here it is http://www.solidsteel.ca/Tbar%20FAQ....f%20my%20truck

thats what the problem is. auto zone could get the after 2/7/94
but mine is a before 2/7/94 rediclious huh?

i called VIP auto they want 302 +shipping and handling charges

i found a NAPA auto parts. they want 180 it's made by "master ride"
i guess it's a division of Dana corp. with a 1 year 100,000 mile warranty.
who drive 100,mile in a year??
i dunno
and they had one for $257 comes direct from Dana with a lifetime warranty

who's moog??

GRI 06-05-2007 12:09 PM

its a parts manufacturer. a big one.

GRI 06-05-2007 12:10 PM

so your truck is a 94?
4x4 2500 or 3500?

GRI 06-05-2007 12:21 PM

this is the first I heard of this . LOL
this is funny.

If I was going to spend $300 or more and not get a lifetime warranty I would just go with the soilid steel setup. for sure

bow2no1 06-05-2007 01:43 PM

yeah it's a 94 made
the date on my door says 2/94
apparently it was made before 2/7/94

what s* luck huh?

ndurbin 06-05-2007 01:56 PM

You can use the post-2/94 track bars IF you drill out the mounting hole on the drivers side frame. I went thru this when I was pricing aftermarket track bars last year for my truck. All the good aftermarket ones are not available for the early 94s (Solid Steel, Thuren, etc.).

I ended up doing the Solid Steel 3rd gen adj. track bar conversion and used a smaller bolt so I didn't have to drill it out.

GRI 06-05-2007 02:01 PM

you beat me to it.

I did a little research and that was what has to be done.

bow2no1 06-05-2007 02:31 PM

isn't the bolt tapered? mine is..
i don't have a tapered bit i'm not sure where to get one?

GRI 06-05-2007 02:40 PM

I have a snap on 1.5" taper bit that I am trying to sell.
I used it for my 1 ton chevy steering upgrade on my 98 ram.

I had to ream the knuckles so it would allow for the larger TREs
I got mine from Snap on for $63

but if you drill for the solid steel set up I dont believe it has to be tapered.

ndurbin 06-05-2007 03:34 PM

The kit comes with a tapered insert to fit the post 2/94 trucks.

Guess you would haveta find a similar tapered insert or get one machined. I didn't really worry bout it, just cinched it down really good. Since with the new Solid Steel mount ya have 3 bolts sharing the load one once did (steering box bolt, bolt thru the crossmember hole, and the old track bar mount bolt).
