i finially ordered a pyrometer

what temps should i be running at?
i have a 94 12v cummins. i don't know if that matters or all diesel should be around the same temps?

Unloaded I'm usually around 450*-500* city and 600*-750* highway.

mine runs 750-800 on the highway at 2300 rpm's unloaded with 3.54 gears.

so what would be to high?

I wouldn't exceed 1250* for longer than 15 seconds. If you're truck is stock you probably won't even be able to reach those temps unloaded.

i have a 4" exhaust, AEM intake, boost elbow.
i have a #10 plate but havn't installed it. i was waiting until i bought a pyrometer to install it. even though a #10 probably would be fine.
figured i wait wait to be on the safe side.

i think alum melts at 1350 degrees, i run my truck to 1400 on quick bursts, but when pulling i never like it above 1000 deg. im not saying you cant run it hotter than 1400, i think the sled pullers get up above 1800 but then again they probibily have to tear the engine down after a couple events. just remember heat is what kills our engines and every time you get the heat up there, you could be causing slow damage to the engine.

Lots of guys that race have the pyro go to 1500*+ and not have problems, BUT the 1500*+ is for SHORT bursts. Like 10 seconds or less.

mine runs ~ 700-800 normal driving and 900-1000 towing..... i have pegged 1600 one time but other than that i only go to 1300 or so before i let off.... that was with the stock turbo.... currently i have to be in it real long before it gets to 1300 now..... but wait till i get more fuel for her....
