nv 5600 reverse

i have 222,000 miles on my nv 5600 and its getting a little hard to get into reverse. sometimes i have to ram it in there and other times it just slides right in! i have not changed the fluid yet but when i do i will be getting amsoil. i bought the truck with 208,000 miles and i dont know what the last owner did and i will be changing the oil soon but just want to make sure its not anything else like syncro's. also how many qts of fluid should i use? ive seen post after post saying over fill it and i was wondering how many qts you would use. thank you!

Change fluid, overfill by about a quart. See if that helps. If you don't have aftermarket coolers on the PTO covers, it should take around 6 quarts.

Since it does it "sometimes", I would suspect the pilot bearing may be getting dry of lube and is allowing the input to turn even though the clutch is released. You may be able to check this by doing the following:

1) stop in gear with the clutch depressed, put into neutral, then put back into gear (keep the clutch pedal depressed the whole time)...it should drop right in.

2) stop, put the trans in neutral and release the clutch, then depress the clutch and pull into gear...if its tough to get into gear, its typically a sign the pilot bearing is dry, the clutch slave cylinder isn't fully disengaging the clutch, or the clutch pressure plate is warped; and the assembly is turning when you are trying to shift (the synchonizers are preventing you from grinding gears, which means they are working).

how can i lube the pilot bearing and keep it lubed?

steved 07-19-2012 11:51 AM

Pull the trans, replace the bearing? What I'm getting at is you are likely due for a new clutch if it hasn't been replaced yet (200k is not unheard of).

ya, srry i was at work and was having one of my wifes moments (blond moment) and wasnt thinking. but i understand, it could be grabbing from time to time and spinning inside. but thank you! also the clutch does feel good still so i think they have replaced it just not the bearing, when i got the truck i had to replace all 4 wheel bearings, tie rod ends, rear brakes, and rebuild the transfer case.........so i think he may have went the cheap route and just did the clutch.

I have a "HD" rebuild on a 5600 with a short shifter. Hate it. Been very tough to get into reverse and first when stopped.

A little trick I was made aware of is to drop it into 4th before you shift into reverse. Works like a champ for me. Not sure what it does with the trans speed or alignment but mine will shake the the truck trying to get it in reverse, but if I drop 4th on my way over, it slides right in effortlessly.

helton87 07-23-2012 08:03 AM

did it start doing that after you put the short shifter in it?

sillyneck 07-23-2012 09:24 PM

no idea. the previous owner had it rebuilt... the short shifter has to be part of the problem. I've driven a few rebuilds and never liked them. just not at nice as the stock feel in my experience. could just be the builders.

helton87 07-24-2012 07:32 AM

it could be. has anyone else had this problem after a rebuild?:humm:

BLACKSMOKEMOAN 07-24-2012 09:22 AM

I just rebuilt my nv4500 and was really surprised to see how worn out the shift forks were (210k) I replaced them and still cant believe the difference.

viperone 07-24-2012 09:00 PM

id say she needs a clutch where did you find a short shift for a g56 ive looked all over for one cause my gd seal on the toploader keeps leaking and you have to oreder it from dodge who tells me there are 2000 on back order because they still run the g56 in the 2012 and they have had alot come back with the seal ripped maybe somone has a cure to my seal leak

helton87 07-25-2012 11:13 AM

blacksmokemoan, i take it that its a good difference? and if so what did you notice? and how much did it cost you, roughly?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

VIPERONE, you could do a broke mans gasket. get the cardboard off of a beer box and make a gasket out of that and use RTV High Temp silicone on both sides and make sure the surface is clean, ive tried that on many things and it held me off untill i got the cash, i did it once on a thermostat housing and i havent changed it bc its still doing good and that was 3 years ago, its on my gaser but still, it worked and still is.

it's an nv5600.

Pretty sure I hate the short shifter though... but I wouldn't doubt if the shift forks are hammered now that you mentioned it (thanks bsm).. the shifter IS pretty sloppy and every once in a while 5th just isn't there for a second. about to do a fluid service and see what's up when I put the extra quart in. I was also told that the plastic roller on the end of the shifter might be broken, that is if this trans even has that.

Just bought tranny fluid from amsoil, as soon as it gets here ill put it in and let everybody know if it helped any, im thinking it is bad oil because last night after doing a little heavy pulling i had to fight to put it into reverse, even trying the trick of putting it in 4th first and it still didnt help.:argh:

helton87 07-30-2012 07:19 AM

changed out the fluid in and it helped out a lot! shifts smoother and i dont have to fight for reverse as much, thank you all for the help!

mule97 07-30-2012 08:30 PM

what weight of fluid. i know they may bea dumb ass question because i putting a new slave cylinder in my nv5600

helton87 07-31-2012 07:13 AM

Im using AMSOIL 5W-30 Synchromesh here is the link. you can put in your truck year model and make and it will tell you what you need.

Syncromesh...Redline MTL, Royal Purple SynchroMax, Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid, Amsoil MTF, and others. But its got to be a synchromesh fluid...

helton87 08-02-2012 02:11 PM

it solved my problem, shifts better and better every day! and i also put 6qts to cover the front and back bearings for pulling up and down hills, thanks for the advice everyone!!! :c:

finicky with fluid. Pretty sure the 5600's have brass syncros where as the 4500's have carbon fiber syncros. shift forks were around $70 depending on which one. I cheated on one of them and got the one that was all steel instead of the one with plastic or carbon buttons on it. Much tighter, just a little noisy when idling in neutral. I rebuilt my whole tranny for under $850 including 4qts mopar fluid at $20 a quart... :argh: and that was with a new bottom counter shaft ($1100 for mopar piece) but i got one for 350 new. Came out great.. Pretty strait forward transmissions. Glad you figured out yours!! :c:

sillyneck 08-08-2012 04:32 PM

so I finally got around to changing my fluid yesterday. HAHAHHA

Bought the truck last year with 10k on fresh rebuild. I put 15k on it. Build tag was $5600 (ironic) with a new clutch, bd short shifter, fast coolers, yada yada.

So it had 25k on it... still all sealed up and dry on the outside.

Drained it.

Didn't bother with the fill plug, dumped 8qts amsoil sync in the shifter house.

THEN I poured all the old fluid into the amsoil bottles.... 5 qts. WOWOWOW... people suck.

So this shop puts the additional capacity coolers on... then looks at the book and it says 5 qts so in go 5 quarts.. probably through the shifter as well.

Probably put 30mi on it so far and it's much better. Jury is still out on the BS shifter.. we'll see if it improves much more after towing this week.

All reports I've read indicate the short shifters tend to be notchy, and make the already notchy NV5600 even more notchy. That was the reason I did not acquire one when I owned my truck...

helton87 08-10-2012 09:51 AM

thanks for the info!

sillyneck 08-13-2012 09:38 AM

Still notchy... much better than with 5qts though :D
