Really Need Help!!!!!
 
I have a 2005 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 Cummins. My truck runs great but once in awhile it will knock puff some smoke and then its fine and it mostly does it when i shift through the gears and start hittin the gas pedal. It doesn do anything when Im just cruisin along. Anyone got some answer for me?:argh:

not yet i just graduated college and i just bought this truck and im waitin to do a full service on it till i get my pay check

no its completely stock. i just checked the fuel filter and its black really black

Not good! Change it out check the oil level and do a major service when you can! Do it yourself we will walk you thru it!

It sounds like you got an injector hanging up...knocking and smoking is a classic sign. A black fuel filter is normal, they just get that way...Baldwin is about the best filtration you can get for an OE replacement (5u IIRC).

I would first try two things...run a heavy dose of Power Service Diesel Kleen through it, I'd probably do a large jug in a tank of fuel. And then try using some 2-cycle oil (search for the kinds on this forum) after the Power Service to see if that helps. You may either have a really dirty injector, or one that is just going to fail...sometimes dosing them real good helps.

Keep an eye on your oil level...make sure its not mysteriously gaining oil.

One thing that puzzles me is that it only happens between gears...almost like the APPS is doing something weird?

Thank you steved that really helped me in diagnoising my problem. How big of a jug should i use of power service? how much oil should i use and will that mess up my filter? what is the apps?
