48RE stuck in first gear. HELP!!!

I have a 2006 CTD with auto 48RE. Did the borg wagner solenoid and transducer kit change around 16K miles ago. About 2 weeks ago something weird happened, after an hr ride to work, I parked the truck. Two or so hrs later I went to start it and it was dead. I finally got it to start and limped to a shop, then had it towed to another shop. Bunch of codes, trans temp and ABS together with a cel came up and then it would not start again. The mechanic called me saying they had pinned out the ECM and diagnosed it to be dead.
I moved the truck to a real diesel shop that specializes in Cummins engines and they go the truck running again, cleaned all harness contacts and terminals, cleared all codes and go the truck running with no more codes.

The twist to the story is that before i the truck broke down it was shifting perfectly but when I drove the truck out of the shop it was clinging on to first gear, once it got to second gear it would shift fine. Now the transmission is stuck in first gear:argh:
I dropped the pan yesterday to inspect the wiring and connectors but all seem well. Replaced the filter and put new atf +4 and still nothing, adjusted the front band and the truck still won't shift out of first gear no matter what.
ATF was not bright red but it had 16K miles on it, normal smell, not burnt nor brown in color and the magnet barely had any sludge on it. I checked all external connectors and wires and they all seem fine. I replaced the governor pressure solenoid and transducer last time I serviced the tranny because of a shuttle shift problem.
Could it be a bad solenoid again, could the whole cell/ecm codes had been thrown by a short caused by either the solenoid or transducer?:s:

I'd truly appreciate any help

Sounds like a bad sensor... find someone with a good diagnostic scan tool

Speed sensor?
Would this not throw a cel? There are no codes at this time.
Thanks

Not always

Sounds like a possibility, I just searched for pricing and its just under $20, I might just order it tomorrow. I don't have anyone local with a scanner

You need to find someone before you start throwing money at it.

Good point but, when I had the shuttle shift problem my 2 local transmission shops told me I needed a new transmission because it was shot... I replaced the governor pressure solenoid and fixed the problem. I can't even think what they'll say this time that the truck is stuck on first gear.
Two weeks ago an independent shop wanted to replace my "shot" ECM for $2400 and my fan clutch that was "bad" as well for $500... a real cummins mechanic cleaned the ECM out of codes and it runs like a top now. (did not charge me a single dollar) but he knows nothing about transmissions.

I am horrified of the dealership so I kind of figure $20 is worth the shot. I understand your point but I feel like I am dead in the water with no decent mechanics around.

How many miles is on your transmission?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Are you sure its starting off in 1st and not 2nd?

126k and no, I removed my edge so I can't be sure. I am assuming so because if I pull from first and try to manually shift to second and then D it won't do a thing.

I hate this, it is so common these days. They will collect parts and labor money for days and weeks and keep on doing it while the problem is still not fixed.

Who you gonna throw money at, the heehaws trying to rip you off or the truck? At least with the truck you may have some good spare parts left after you guess wrong.

Call Dave at Goerend!!! Sounds like a valve body issue but he will know!!

Thank you all for the replies. I replaced the speed sensor and did nothing, $16 down the drain, no biggie:w2:
Then I dropped the pan... again, took the base off and cleaned/ checked everything. Replaced gov. solenoid and transducer, added new ATF (6qts) and put everything back together. One hour and $160 later the truck is shifting like new again :jump: This time I put a drain plug on the pan to make servicing easier.

Hope this thread helps some one else along the way.

So here's an issue... thought my starter drive wasn't engaging, could here it spinning, but not cranking the engine... had 20 min to make it to auto zone to get a starter if that was the problem... got underneath the thing to find that the starter was physically loose, I mean the top bolt missing the bottom two backed out, one barely hanging on! figuring that the problem was the physical interface, and missing one bolt, we didn't see the need to remove and replace a working part, instead tighten the bolts back down and replace the missing bolt the next day... Well, that worked, but when tightening the battery leads the truck turned off... when we attempted to restart, the housing around the lower bolt cracked and back to the existing problem... The decision was made to place the lower bolt in place of the upper, limp home, and install new starter the next day... Here's were it gets interesting... The upper bolt is in a hard to reach location using a 10mm and a ratchet, my friend accidently drops the ratchet and best we could tell it hits the lead, and arcs... Everyone's okay... Finally get it tightened, truck starts...

So, why am I in a tranny post talking about the starter... it's called foreshadowing I suppose...

On my drive home I didn't notice anything wrong until about half a mile from the house, the truck seemed like it wasn't shifting right... I slowed, and put it in neutral... then back to drive... I was making the speed limit of 25, but then started to loose power... completely! I was stuck rev'ing the engine 100 yards from my driveway on the side of the road, reverse wasn't working, and neither was drive... Finally it started moving, but not the way it should, there was just no "take off", and when it tried shifting it just started jerking... kinda like a limited slip engaging and disengaging in sand... Got it parked, and tried moving it, but when it is put in gear it doesn't roll at idle in drive or reverse... if I get it up to around 1500 RPM it'll slowly respond, but not with much force, barely with the power you'd get at idle...

best I can guess is that that spark shorted something out in the transmission... but I have no idea where to start... could be the frustration that this just happened, but I'm in the dark right now... guys/gals, does anyone out there have an idea of what is going on? I deploy in a couple of months, and need my only vehicle to get to and from work, can't rely on rides from coworkers all the time!

06 CTD 4WD... no codes... stock 48re... 4WD still engages fine... thanks in advance
