Major Truck Problem! R.I.P TRANSFOMER
Hey guys Its my first thread and its not a good one.. I own a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L. I recently put bad fuel in the tank. It was running fine until it started losing power then the exhaust got extremely loud. After I turned it off it would not turn back over. I drained the intire tank and put new fresh diesel back in. Tried starting it and nothing.. Sprayed some engine starter in my intake tube and BOOM It cranked up alright until the RPM's went through the roof and it was white smoking clouds. I turned the key off immediatly to find out it is still roaring with no key in the ignition!! I hopped out the truck and started backing away in case it blew up or something. It finally just shut off after about 7secs. I didn't know what was going on! I let the truck sit for about 13hrs then tried to start it up again and IT DID IT AGAIN! I ran this time with the key in my hand because it was even louder and more smoke! After that I said no more. Me and my buddy just towed it across town to the #1 Diesel Mechanic in the state of MS. Im hoping for the best but expecting the worse,You guys have any Idea what is wrong?:argh:

run away diesel. lucky it didnt go up in flames.
|
i've never heard of a CR runaway :')
i wish you the best :) |
I don't see how its a runaway diesel since its computer controlled unless somethings up with the computer system.
|
Engine starter = ether? If so that may cause it to runaway
|
sounds like maximum overdrive lol
|
yah its a common rail, and i aint no mechanic but thats what it sounds like to me.
|
Only way a cr will run away is if it's sucking oil in from a blown turbo! maybe a injector tip but to keep running I'd say it's sucking oil from somewhere!
|
Im not sure whats wrong yet but my mechanic said it smells and looks like there was unleaded fuel in it. They are flushing the tank and engine tomorrow and putting fresh diesel in. I HOPE & PRAY IT STARTS! He also said if the engine is ?ruined? I would have to buy a whole new engine because they do not sell internal parts for the 5.9 24V cummins:baby:
I really do not think the engine could be blown from the unleaded fuel and a little bit of engine starter. Im no mechanic but I believe the turbo is sucking oil from somewhere. Ill just wait and see Thanks for all the replies, Selby. |
How did you get unleaded fuel in your tank?:humm:
|
Any diesel can run away. Doesn't matter if it's mechanically injected, computer controlled, common rail or not. All the computer does is control fuel delivery. If the engine finds another source of fuel, i.e. oil from the turbo or flammable fumes in the air, it'll run till it scatters, the fuel is used up or the air supply is removed.. usually by placing a board or something similar against the turbo intake tract.
You most certainly CAN buy internal engine components of the 5.9L Cummins, though depending on what's hurt and the amount of damage, the cost of an entire rebuild could very well be as expensive as buying a re-manufactured engine in a crate and dropping it in (around $6000.00 or so). A BRAND NEW crate engine will run around the $14,000 mark! Good luck! |
well guys bad news. 2 pistons are shot and some more damage. Have to get a new engine. Worst news ive ever recieved. Man oh man how am I going to afford this!? I move to Starkville next week for college:c:! This couldnt have happened at a worse time.:argh:
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Either I Pressed the wrong button at the pump or the pump had gas in it.. I know I know.... |

Do you have the receipt for the fuel? You should have saved a sample of the fuel - if the gas station is at fault and you can prove it - they owe you a new engine. |

[QUOTE=Dr. Evil;593603]I think you better look for a different "mechanic" - they DO sell internal parts for a 24V Cummins. Your "mechanic" doenst seem very knowledgeable with comments like that.[/QUOT
My mechanic knows that there are internal parts for the Cummins but the block is cracked and the engine is trash. I just misunderstood him on the phone. So I had to ask again. |
Um. OK. So how in the world did the block get cracked???:humm:

I'm not sure about possible insurance coverage on your policy. While I am not advocating this course action, could it have possibly been VANDALS that did this to you. Since you have explored every possible way the gasoline could have been introduced and can not come up with a cause, what is left?
Under this scenario, it would be covered under your comp and collision clause in your policy. |
ETHER is bad for a diesel Eng. And a big shot is even bad as heck on it.I was not surprise when you found the piston gone rod throw the block You jest junk a very good Eng.
|
i'd use the information you have been supplied with on the insurance policies here !
some vandals put gasoline and ruined your engine ;) |
man thats shitty, wish the best of luck!! After reading this, i thought about my truck and it made me cringe ugh.... :scare2: I thought it was bad when my trans went..
|
There's a guy with a new thread on a truck he's buying maybe you can work a deal with him for the engine?! How much do you owe on the truck? MAybe someone here will buy it! I'm interested.
