48re on the outs?

So, after 500mi of my ownership, looks like I am already having serious problems with my 48re.

It was hunting, and shuddering under heavy acceleration in 3rd... butnow i've got some new symptoms.

Started hard shifting from drive to reverse and back (completely stopped), and yesterday I went to leave work and the truck wouldnt go while in drive... gave it a bit of gas, nothing... more gas, nothing... before the engine returned to idle the truck slammed into 1st.

My question is...

from my very limited knowlege it sounds like some of these symptoms could definatly be caused by servo, valve body, torque converter... but if those things are the problems, can driving around with the symptoms physically harm the transmission itself? Eg, I'd be able to swap those parts in, but still have a transmission that'll go any day?

I had it to the dealer I bought the thing from and they said they talked to a dodge dealer that says... "if the truck sits for 48hr, up to 3 seconds of being in drive and not driving is not alarming".

If infact bits of the tranny's internals get fixed, should I immediately go for a stronger valve body?

Looks like you need one of Dave transmissions: Goerend Transmission Incorporated

ronnyek 05-13-2010 04:06 PM

it'd be nice, but I think I am going to have to choose something cheaper =( I just dont have that kinda money on hand at the moment =(

Anything else I can do? At this point I've got an appt tues for a tranny inspection (200 bucks deductible if tranny is deemed bad by dodge dealer, otherwise I pay for all diagnosis etc).

I am halfway wondering if a tranny service would be more cost effective if it is infact not a problem. (and dont get tranny repaired by dodge)

CreeperSleeper 05-13-2010 04:24 PM

Where abouts are you located?

ronnyek 05-13-2010 04:46 PM

central coast of california

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

if I get everything back and its all in working order shifting perfect etc... is there things I can do pre-emptively to prevent this form happenign in the future

CreeperSleeper 05-13-2010 04:47 PM

Hmmmm.... Yeah the Portland, OR area may be a bit too much of a drive. I would highly recommend Lake Oswego Transmission Unlimited if that wasn't the case!

If I were you, I would at least call Dave @ Goerends and talk to him about the issues you are having. I also got some great quotes from our wonderful venders in regards to complete trans shipped to me. I hope you get it taken care of soon! Having a health trans really makes the truck 100x better! :jump:

tranny is gone, do it right and do it once, and i doubt it's under warranty due to the year but if it is consider yourself lucky, dave makes some of the best transmissions around, even his lower end transmissions are way better than the factory could ever have dreamed of

If it's deemed ok by the dealer put a valve body 600. and TQ 1200. in it that should last for a while!!
But I agree call Dave!! He'll give you what you need in your price range!

Anything that gets done to that tranny by anybody is going to cost waaaaay more than $200. If you can get it repaired, even to stock for $200, I'd jump on that and save up for a better unit somewhere down the road in case it ever craps out again.

ronnyek 05-14-2010 09:03 AM

totally agree... and honestly I dont take things like this lightly, but I think if I was going to have to shell out 3700 bucks for a transmission, I'd just look into converting to manual.

I think automatics are a pleasure to drive and convenient etc... especially for stop and go traffic, but honestly... I'd probably choose a simple purely mechanical device over something more complex any day.

I've never owned an automatic anything that had a transmission last worth a shit, mostly having problems before ~50kmi and even then when they were fixed they never drove like new.

Ronnyek,
I have a 2004.5 that lunched the tranny with 130,000 miles on it. I purchased the truck with 75,000 miles on it. I thought it shifted and drove VERY nice when I purchased it and the transmission showed no adverse signs. I checked it closely because I knew the trans is a notorious weakpoint.
When I dropped the trans pan at 130,000 for a fluid change due to symptoms very similar to yours I pulled out about 1/2 of a thrust washer that appeared to be about 6" in OD when whole. Needless to say I was :scare2::dang::argh:
I took the advice of several people on this board and called Dave at Goerend Transmissions. I was able to get a transmission that meets my current needs and that basically I am confident will last longer than the rest of the truck no matter what I throw at it! And to boot it drives BETTER than the stock unit on any other truck I have ever driven, new or used. :jump: I know the initial sticker shock is :scare2: but trust me when I say it is worth EVERY penny!

ronnyek 05-14-2010 09:25 AM

Oh no doubt about it, and the rest of the truck is pristine... I just cant afford the 3700bucks atm, and thats just the lowest end one he has as a full tranny isnt it? I just bought a house, bought the truck, and got reamed by US govt for taxes... if 200 bucks will buy me like 6mo, I'll be in a much better position to do that.

ronnyek 05-17-2010 10:02 AM

well they are going to look at it tomorrow... as an update, in the past few days the shifting of the transmission has gotten significantly worse. It now wants to hang onto a gear to almost a rediculous point (like I had it in 2). When slowing down, the downshifts clunk pretty badly. I caught a bit of video from my camera phone. This was acceleration from a stop to about 35. Very very light throttle, where I would have expected a shift MUCH sooner. Seems like it only does this on some shifts into drive (eg, if I shift into drive it will be consistently effed until I shut it down)

bobcat67 05-17-2010 12:10 PM

your tranny is shot

dangerous1965 05-17-2010 05:20 PM

fried clutch pack!!

ronnyek 05-18-2010 02:44 PM

Not that anyone necessarily cares, but they have thus far said they yanked the "solenoid pack", and saw that it was plugged with "clutch material". I will have to bring the truck in monday for explorative surgery...

I guess at least they arent trying to skirt the issue. I've had my bmw in the shop about 25 times for the same thing (which is an extremely common issue) and they've beat around the bush each time.

ronnyek 05-24-2010 05:42 PM

another update
they claim solenoid pack and kickdown band are going to be replaced... which I am skeptical thats actually going to completely solve the problem (eg, make it so its like new), but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I get it back.

ronnyek 05-31-2010 02:56 AM

replaced both things, flushed, adjusted bands... talked with their tranny guy and he was very informative... but...

After my second drive, its doing the same ol shit... seems like once I get her warm, then stop and get out and run into a store for like 10 minutes, then get back in... its shifting all nutty. Wants to hang onto 1st way too long, gotta hammer it to get it to shift. Shudders getting on the freeway when its in its bad mood. SO I guess back to the shop it goes.

temperoath 02-25-2011 09:12 PM

Does the accelerator seem stiffer when its occurs?

TeckJohn 02-25-2011 09:41 PM

I can get you a kit and torque converter for less than $1000
