Confused and Need an Expert - Exhaust Question

I need some education. I have a 2006 Quad Cab 4x4 with an Edge EZ and S&B intake. I believe the '06's already have a 4" exhaust on them. If I wanted to improve my fuel economy and performance would upgrading with a new exhaust system really make a difference? If so why, and explain the difference between a cat-back and turbo back exhaust system and the advantages/disadvantages. I am looking at Silverline which looks like only makes a cat-back system and MBRP which makes a turbo-back system? I know this is a lot to ask, but I am really confused. Thanks in advance.

Even if you changed to another 4", aftermarket have smoother bends, and less restrictive mufflers. Turbo back also will get rid of your cat (huge restriction). I would get the turbo back for sure. You will notice an EGT drop, a little more power (not much) and a little better mileage. Probably 1 or 2mpg:U: Do it, its worth it.

Save yourself some money on the exhaust kit, buy a muffler delete kit and gut the cat if you are after fewer restrictions and a different exhaust tone. I know a few guys around here that have done this and their trucks sound great but I have not had a chance to ask them about the mpg gain.

i saw a little difference in just the muffler delete im going to gut the cat next, its a huge restriction

Just replacing the stock muffler w/ a full flow made a huge difference. I had to remove the cat cause it was plugging up. Anyway I used a piece of flexpipe. That and the muffler ran $350 including what a muffler shop charged to do the muffler swap.

You can buy a turbo back kit for less than that.

I would just cut the muffler and cat out and run straight pipes, right there is your 4" turbo back exhaust get a big ol 6" tip and wake up the neighbors on your way back home :w2:

Full SS??

I have the MBRP SS catback and it came with enough left over pipe to cut the cat out and weld in the straight pipe in it's place. This is on my 06. It sounds great and runs much smoother and getting a little better milage as well. It just feels like the truck can breathe now. I had the catback a few months before I deleted the cat and I wish I would have done it right away. My truck sounds great under acceleration but on the highway even with a trailer it is nice and quiet:U:

Didnt know stock was SS, for less than that would be aluminized. Not SS

I have thought very hard about straight piping it. However, I have a company car so this is my wife's daily driver and I know she would not care to have it too loud.

Silverline has got turbo back. That's how my duals are. Might just have to ask for the part number and relay it when ordering the exhaust.

Got a 5" system from Full Spectrum Performance, found on Ebay. Cost for the turbo back system with muffler was $350. Aluminized, not SS. 5" is overkill really, lost a little bottom end but got that back with a QZ module. Sounds great, not loud. Major difference in how the engine breathes. Runs smoother under acceleration than with stock. Enough pipe to delete the cat too.
Stock 4" is plenty and if you can do it yourself, just get a high flow muffler, cat delete pipe, and big tip. Save bux. I've got a 6" stainless tip, looks great.:U:

Don't gut the CAT it is a $1800 part so I hear. Just get the Delete kit if you want it gone. If I were to do it all over again I would just but the Magnaflow muffler replacement kit, It's like $200. Strait pipe is too damn loud for me. I have had Flowmaster-Sounds great minimal drone but EGT was higher then I thought it should be. AFE Turbo back absolutely no drone, quicker turbo spool, fairly quiet but I was not a fan of the exhaust note or idle sound. Aeroturbine the best sound I've heard on a Cummins but major drone and super loud. Now I run a 30" magnaflow and it is perfect, no drone and quiet until I want it to be loud. My wife makes fun of me all the time for how many mufflers I have had.
