Turbo going bad?

How can I tell if my turbo is going bad. There is oil on the intake blades and I hear a whine out of it when I turn the truck off. I am also noticing the water temp getting warm going up hill. Thanks in advance! John

Any shaft play? If there is oil on the compressor it may be a seal that can be rebuilt.

I have some side to side and a little in and out. I bought the rebuild kit so it's gonna get freshened up. This weekend.

super simple:jump: just make sure that you mark the shaft relationship with the compressor wheel so you don't throw off the balance, the nut is left handed and it not real tight, about 12 lbs is all. also mark the relationship between the exhaust housing and the center hub before you take it apart. I had to loosen my four bolts and tap on the center hub to get it to line up with my oil drain. One more thing, pay close attention to the orientation and order of the internal parts... very easy project.

I just finished the rebuild and now it makes a really bad siren sound and scrapes at certain rpm's. ideas?

out of balance badly or you did something totally wrong, maybe even a bent shaft or loose compressor wheel, pull the compressor housing off and take a look and see if you see metal shavings or marks on the inside of the housing where a wheel could be rubbing.

Also, check out this link, its the factory service manual for your hx35 directly from holset themselves, free to download, its 80+ plus pages so be aware of that before printing it off.

www.cummins.com/turbos - service repair manuals

click on the scroll tab, scroll down and click on the HX30/32/35/38/40/GW tab

(PS, should you need a new turbo, Ive got a spare hx35 for sale)

yes it needs balanced. Happened to me once before. Also just for those looking, even though the shaft may be tight, it could still be in need for a rebuild. You do not want oil going into your intake. It pools up in your intercooler and causes higher EGTs.

Found a guy with a good deal on another hy. I installed it but now I hear a hissing sound on boost up. Boost leak?
