High Idle 3cyl Cutout High Idle

I have been trying to get the flash done on my truck so that i can have the use of high idle and 3 cyl cut out. i went to dealer they said if i didnt have a high output 5.9l 24 valve they could do it. so i am now looking for a used Smarty Programmer or somebody in the Chicagoland area that might want to make a few bucks and let me program my truck.

Let me know, thanks

The dealer can do it, the high idle and 3 cylinder idle can be activated by them. The dealer would/will charge youabout $85-$110 for the flash. You might try a Cummins dealer to have the flash done. If you were closer I would do it for you with my SMARTY.:tu:

Welcome to DB!!

They can definitely do it, as my SO truck/engine/ECM has it enabled. There is another thread on here about someone having the same issues with the dealer.

Ah a new friend on here. Welcome to the site. :hellox:

When this is activated does the ecm automatically engage the 3cyl High Idle at certain temperatures or is it manually controlled?

Very Interested now because I live within 10 miles of both a Dodge and Cummins dealership.

stodg73 01-04-2011 12:04 PM

The 3 cylinder idle and the high idle are both controlled by the computer/ECM. If certain temps are met, then the high idle is used, again if other certain criteria are met then the 3 cylinder high idle kicks in. If you plug in your truck, it generally doesn't use the idle features. When the 3 cylinder idle does kick in, the engine will sound like it is trying to tear itself apart. This is normal.

Well generally my truck is plugged in every night so it may not be necessary but always worth the thought. Thanks

my dealer said that the 3 cyl. high idle is for automatics only also it is a great thing if you can do it! it will automatically kick on if the intake manifold temperature is 32 degrees or lower and also if the coolant is 140 degrees or lower

stodg73 01-04-2011 07:13 PM

The 3 cylinder high idle is also for the manual, I have it on mine. And yes it is GREAT!

jagatz 01-05-2011 10:06 AM

Im a little confused here, ive gota a 2001 automatic. the high idle and 3cyl high idle have to be programed into the truck? its not a stock function?

stodg73 01-05-2011 10:43 AM

Yes, the high idle and the 3 cylinder idle were not used by dodge when the vehicles were produced. The information for the high idle is on the ECM from Cummins. So in order to have it activated, you need to either have a SMARTY tune uploaded or go to the dealer and have it flashed on.

GuyWithA24Valve 01-05-2011 06:52 PM

Okay so can you choose either the 3 cylinder high idle or the high idle? Or when they flash it does it automatically enable both?

Dr. Evil 01-05-2011 07:25 PM

You want both anyway

GuyWithA24Valve 01-05-2011 07:43 PM

Why do I want both? If the 3 cylinder kicks in when intake temp is 32 degrees or lower and the coolant temp is 140 or lower, when does the high idle ever kick in? Or when they flash the high idle, is that where you can hit the cruise and it bumps up?

stodg73 01-05-2011 08:08 PM

For our trucks, the high idle and 3 cylinder high idle, are one and the same. You are unable to get one or the other. I don't know if we can get a flash to use our cruise control to kick in the idle features.

Thats one of the things I like on the 03s and newer. I would love to be able to set it with the cruise control

That would be great. I would love that feature on mine as well.

High idle kicks in at a certain temp, and even colder temps activate 3cylinder and high idle.

If youre in Minnisota you shouldnt have any trouble getting the high idle to kick in. You will need to leave the truck unplugged to get it to come on. And it does work really well.

94dizzyram 01-06-2011 03:16 PM

I had to tell my dealer to enable the 3 cylinder idle. That is what his computer called it. I love it. I dont even plug my truck in anymore because the high idle will actually give me heat in the cab in about 10 minutes or so. The 3 cylinder idle only kicks in at 15 or below. I havent experienced that yet. Good luck.

DieselWeasel 01-07-2011 06:55 PM

There used to be a writeup on dodgeram.org but for the life of me i cant find it anymore. It told when and how the 3 cyl idle and high idle worked. I DO remember that the 3 cyl does enable at 15* not 35* like others said.

scottsjeeprolet 01-07-2011 07:12 PM

Just get the Adrenaline and have high idle any time you want. Just set the Pl to 0 & high idle.
Also high idle engages until a preset engine temp is reached.:tu:

I have an ADR with Pulse myself but still want 3 cylinder idle also. Warms up WAY faster.

I also plug my truck in overnight BUT spend 10 hours a day at WORK where the engine cools down fast when its sub-zero out!

scottsjeeprolet 01-07-2011 07:54 PM

I used to have the Smarty so my 3 cylinder high idle is there if needed.

cummins24valve 01-24-2013 06:08 AM

Well I have a smarty in a 98.5 24 valve and even at 9 degrees I only see the high idle not the 3 cylinder warm up

acruxksa 01-24-2013 10:44 PM

For me it seems 3cyl high idle doesn't kick in unless temps are well below 15f. I actually paid the dealership $100 to enable it.

After using it for a full winter now I don't think it's worth it. Your much better off just starting your truck, letting it run for a couple minutes to settle and taking off with a light foot (1800 rpm's or less). Temps come up much faster this way especially with a cold front on your truck.

RollinCoal99 01-24-2013 11:26 PM

my truck sat outside for 2 days plugged in and didnt move it, went to start it today and 3 cyl high idle kicked on, my quadzilla said the motor was 14 degrees lol so try it and let it sit a whole day

You're probably right about this, especially since most times I plug in. When plugging in, chances are that even though outside temps are much colder than 15f, my iat temps aren't.

I still don't think it's of much value up here in Alaska. Much better to just get moving with a light foot and put a real load on the engine.
