Just to be clear, the VP-44 IS NOT a problematic pump. A VP-44 is lubricated and cooled with the fuel that is supplied by the problematic FACTORY lift pump. The VP is a rotary pump that wears out with use, just like any other component. And like other components, there are steps one can take to maximize the service life of parts. One of these steps is installing a high flow fuel system such as an airdog or FASS. When deciding between a 12V and 24V trucks, there is going to be compromises; a 24V has a VP, and a 12V has killer dowel pin. I believe the 24V had kdp up to 99. Sorry for the rant, tired of people in the 24V section ragging on the 24V.

I love my 24V truck but I get nervous at times because I'm not that familiar with it's mechanicals. I've always owned gasoline powered ones and this happens to be my first diesel.
I have a small single axle trailer and I would occasionally tow a small race car. I'm so satisfied with it's performance and have never been happier!
I think I will never go back to a gas-powered truck again.

To answer your question about the automatic lockers. They are powered by the vaccum pump on the truck. So no vaccum, no four wheel drive. And I accidentally bent the fork on the actuator that locks the hubs in when I tried locking them in when my back wheels were spinning (stupid). It was an easy fix though. I just pulled it out and straightened it.

Being from the Northeast (now from SC)...I'd really advise staying away from buying a truck from PA. I know first hand that the stuff they salt the roads with in the winter rusts your vehicles out severely. Even if they look OK after 5 to 10 years....they will already have the beginnings of the "rust you can't stop" in places that will soon show it's ugly and destructive process. If the Florida truck is still available...and was a "southern" truck.....I'd say get that one. :-)
