When I replaced mine a few years ago it was a dealer only item. That may have changed by now though. I always use Cummins dealer for any dealer only item I need.

Mine is doing the same thing, rough smokey starts when its still hot or warm
Doing the same thing to, running it till it dies

Mine did the same thing the other day on a new injection pump, only about a month on it. My engine was hot from driving on the bush roads for a couple of hours and I shut it off for 10 min and didnt want to start right away.:argh: I tested fuel pressure at the banjo bolt, and I guess that was enough to relieve some pressure cuz it flashed right up after that.:tu:

my '99 does the same, with 145k. i have to wait almost till the next day before mine will start. i'll have to try the fuel tank cap. it does not smoke or anything like that, if it did i would know that the pump is more than likely the problem but still it may be the problem. good thing this is not my DD! the rollover ball in the tank is where, in the part with the sending unit? Mine is fairly new, not sure that would be my problem either. What else could be a problem?

Concerning the 24v's I talked to a shop to see if they had any trucks with these problems.
They said they had and there first instinct was to manually prime the system by cracking injector lines. If that didn't work they checked all fuel lines and connections into the pump and from the tank to see if there was anyway possible for air to leak in. The next thing they said to check was the o-rings on the crossover tubes. One might not be sealed good or needs replaced and is leaking in air.

Mine is somehow getting progressively better by the week. It will still give a hard start every now and again but starts fine normally. The only thing I've done is clean all the connections on the battery and fuel pump. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Hard starts when warm on a second gen is a classic sign of your VP-44 going out. Check for codes just to be sure. And make sure you have a fuel pressure guage,.

fuel pressure is good and no codes.
