got a AC problem
 

so i have this leak at the port where ya put in the refrigerant. so i have low refrigerant causing my AC compressor to run way more frequently than it should. i was told by friend that its alright to unplug the power from the compressor so it wont kick on. i wanted to find out if thats alright, if it will damage anything. at least untill i can get it fixed. thanks guys

It won't damage anything, unless the wire harness hits ground, then it might pop a fuse. It will be safe to unplug it, but is probably easier, quicker, and safer to pull the A/C fuse or Relay.
The downside to no A/C is no cold air, and no dry air for defrost.

If you can charge the ac and put a cap on to help prevent the leak you are good to go. You could have some dirt in the shraeder valve and some times a quick push and let go can free it as is the case on a tire valve. watch your eyes and hands be careful. It is a good idea if you disconnect it to energize it on at times to lube the seal BUt it will only cycling on if there is enough refrigerant to close the low pressure switch. Good luck Ed

so does that mean if i use the defroster it will fog the windows. i mean. this sint a big deal, it jut kicks on and off alot when idleing. ya, i had my heater core done last fall and thats when they found the leak. it has a cap on it. the guy tried to fix it, but it is leaking, something broke on it. i dont mind not having the AC, i just drive with the windows down anyway. but if its going to fog my windows or something ill just leave it be

It won't be as efficient as it would with the system charged. The air won't be dried by the evaporator, it will have the same humidity in it as outside air. If it does start fogging up, roll down the window a bit. That will keep the humidity level low, but keep heat on your windshield.

I've got two parts to this...
My a/c has sprung a leak that I cannot find (I have dye in the system and have used the special light and glasses, to no avil) Any suggestions would be great!
Second part: since the a/c is TU, I pulled the relay and stashed it away. No compressor, no dangling wires and no problems.:pca1:

Were you running the A/C compressor when you had the dye in the system?

If you can get your hands on a bottle of nitrogen and a regulator, fill the system with that. To about 100PSI, and use a spray gun of soapy water at all the connectors.

They also have the leak detector sniffers which seem to work fairly well

Now this may be a stupid question: can I just use the air compressor to charge the system?

I thought that question might come up. You can, BUT.... compressed air is dirty and has moisture in it. Nitrogen is dry, and just nitrogen. I don not suggest compressed air, but if that's all you have it will work. In either situation when the leak is fixed, one should pull a vacuum on the system to remove any impurities, then charge with the appropriate freon.
