ABS and Brake light stuck on

I have an 01 4x4. I took an 20,000lbs from Southern Cal to East New Mexico. I parked my truck over night in 5 degree weather. When I started it the next morning my ABS and brake light were stuck on. I checked every wire I could find connected to the braking system and the brake fluid. Is there a particular sensor or item I should be checking out or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Check the sensors at the front wheels make sure they are plugged in and no broken wires there. And the rear sensor is in the rear diff but if you speedo is working ok then this one is most likely ok. Thats all i can think of off the top sorry not a great big help but maybe someone else will getin here that might have a better idea good luck

Speedo is working fine. I checked the wires. I will see about getting some new senors. Thank you.

I forgot to mention........I am pretty sure with the abs you can disconnect the batteries for a sec to clear codes if it was just a fluke that happend and not a hard fault might just fix your problem could try that and see what happens.

01trailerpuller 01-08-2010 10:53 PM

I plugged in a code reader. It did not have any but I will try it anyways.

blkjack 01-08-2010 10:56 PM

Well thats good if it didnt have any trouble codes maybe by resetting it by disconnecting the batts might just do the trick hope it works. worth a try anyways :c:

There is a little sensor down under the brake pedal. When you push it in it activates your brake lights. Mine was sticking before and almost drove me crazy. Theres a little bushing/shim thing that wears out i guess. Maybe your problem i dunno just somthing that happened to mine

01trailerpuller 01-09-2010 10:40 PM

Lights work fine. I pulled the battery cables and let it sit for an hour with no success. I was reading in my Chiltions it says that there are 8 possobilies for the light to stay on and the only way to find out what it is, is to use a mechanics code reader. The normal autozone reader will not show what is wrong with it.

blkjack 01-09-2010 11:14 PM

Thats the kinda nice thing about abs problems there isnt too many codes for them and are pretty stright forward to diagnose. Well sorry that didnt work for you was hoping that it might have been just a glitch in the system to set the light. Another thing is the brake fluid level full?

crazycooter 01-11-2010 08:21 PM

obdIII is the only reader that can access the cab system that controls the brakes and abs. I have had both lights on since I bought mine. It stops fine, I am not worried yet

Mine did this two years ago it that rear sensor in the rear diff it was easy to change one bolt to pull its on top passenger side in the diff your speedo will go out next

vcustoms86 01-11-2010 08:44 PM

same thing with mine. both lights came on, then i lost the abs all together and could get the truck to lock up and slide :scare2:, and then the speedo went to zero and stayed. changed the sensor in the top of the rear diff and it fixed everything. took it to the dealer to get the codes read first though.

does your cruise work?

HotRodCrewCab 01-12-2010 08:12 AM

im going through similar problems right now, i changed the rear sensor, and it didnt fix any of the problems

Unfortunately it is not the rear diff sensor. I just got back from the dealership. They went through the system. My ABS pump seized and took the ABS controller with it. They want $1300 to fix it. Why does this stuff always happen when you are away from home? When I get home I am going to have my mechanic check it out. He only does the 5.9 gen 1-3 and everything on the trucks. I will keep my fingers crossed that he can do it cheaper.

blkjack 01-12-2010 05:54 PM

Umm yea that sounds pretty scarry :scare2: I would definatly get a 2nd opinion especially from someone you trust. When i was wrechin for a living I only maybe changed a couple of abs pumps and thats over 11yrs and a hand ful off abs modules.

I have a 97 and both the brake light and abs light came on i couldnt figure out what it was. I fixed it one day when i bled my back brakes some nasty black fluid came out and the lights have never came back on. I dont know but you might give it a try might work for you.:tu:

Whenever the ABS light turns on, ABS function seizes to exist.

Once you've checked tire pressures, fluid levels, and ensure no leaks and a proper mechanical braking system is in place, check one is the sensors. They are typically a pulse generating sensor. Unplug the sensor at the wheel, turn your Digital multimeter to AC Voltage, red on one side of the plug terminal, black on the other. Now have someone give the tire a good spin. As long as these trucks do have pulse generated sensors like every other vehicle on the road, your voltage should increase as wheel speed increases. If you do not get the reading, clean everything and check the reluctor ring to sensor gap.

All this being said, I am unsure of the details with the Dodge truck ABS system, but this procedure is "generally speaking" with ABS systems.

Good luck! :)

I will check that out. According to Dodge my ABS pump seized and that caused a short in the control module.

could doing a burn out cause this cause it happened to me a day after i showed my buddies how a real truck does a burnout ..speedo doesnt work till 20 mph too

cawhorses 04-12-2010 06:58 AM

Yeah a burnout could cause problems with your abs and braking systems. You're using the brake to try and hold back all that pressure, and spinning your wheels while holding down the pedal can be real hard on your pads, discs and drums also.

When you replace the front abs harness, left and right, or just the faulty one. Be sure that you pinch the connectors a bit. Before plugging in the new harness. The two prongs on the new harness seem to be a bit narrower than the original. By pinching the female connectors, you ensure a good contact, when plugging back in. Otherwise, the abs and brake light will stay on. Good luck
