curious questions

Alright guys i have a 98.5 cummins i have noticed that not to many people own the 98.5 this is my first diesel did i pick a wrong year truck or something whats the diff. between 98.5 99 and 2000 years

wildbill 09-13-2009 10:29 PM

98.5 is when they went to the 24 valve engine and the VP44 injector pump.

NCFPD 09-14-2009 03:25 PM

But is there a reason not many people own the 98.5

biged681985 09-14-2009 03:29 PM

because its a half year
like not many have the 98 12 valve
was only built half a year
as far as i know, no differences in 98.5 and a 99.
if so it is just small interior differences

:c:

Nothing really changed from 98.5-2000.

gpandlf 09-14-2009 06:13 PM

only thing I can thing i can think is the wastegate setup on the turbo is different , its not connected to the compressor housing..

NCFPD 09-14-2009 08:50 PM

I have a 98.5 and my boy has the 2000 mostly the same, he has differant fuel filter, differant and better removable rotors, a little differant dash but black and all cracked mine is grey and perfect. seems most other things are the same. Great trucks, have some week links but when they are addressed supper. Ed trans, ps support, steering linkage, fuel pump

NCFPD 09-15-2009 01:33 PM

I see that you mentioned the ps support and linkage is that possibly why my steering feels loose and it seems like it has just a little to mush play bec. i dont have the support my ball joints look and feel fine.

You have the death wobble. All 2nd Gen Dodge trucks get that. Buy and install a steering brace like the DSS and you'll be much better off.

I have 3rd generation Doug Thuran pan hard bar, I also added the frame to p/s bracket that braces the p/s at the end. The pan hard bar is a common problem and a slight amount of movement will cause a wobble at times. Ed

they had the 53 block to on them and the stock lift pump sucks

Lostnwalmart 09-15-2009 03:42 PM

fun fact the cross over tubes (the part in the head that delivers fuel to the injector) is different on the 98.5's its the same as the industrial motors that were made pre 99. it wont affect anything its just a slight difference:c:

Na i don have the death wobble it just kinda feels like i am hydroplaining like theres alot of play in the steering

I agree with you there--this is a great place to be! :c: Glad you're liking it here and you found what you're looking for!

Wyatt Earp 09-17-2009 09:46 AM

Well, if it isn't the death wobble than you have a messed up sector shaft. The play in these things from the factory is crazy sloppy. I don't have the spec for it off hand but Dr. Evil likely does.

I still think by adding the DSS you'd get better response as that new bearing on the front end that the DSS has is a great little thing.

NCFPD 09-18-2009 12:05 AM

alright well i will deff. look into getting that dss
