my friends fuel problem
 
my friend has an 01 24v.. the has edge stacked with superchips and we put a inline pump for fuel on there.. the truck has issues starting we thought it was a hard start so we disconnected the pump and tryed to crank it and it still is the same with.. his fuel gauge says 0 psi if the pump isnt running and when we plug it up it is at 25.. i was worndering if he vp could be bad..

Well for starters....The Edge / Superchips isnt the greatest idea. High timing is seen and can cause some issues.
We'll need some more information to help diagnose your buddies truck. Are there any DTC codes present? Is their plenty of fuel volume? Have you cracked the injector lines (at the head) and spun it over a few times to see if you've got fuel there?

yes the truck will crank and run but it is hard to get it to start.. we have done everything you can think of to try to solve this.. now im thinking his vp is going to eat sh*t

sounds like a loss of prime issue, Could also be a connector tube leaking a bit. If the hard start isnt related to a loss of prime it's most likely a vp-44.

If the fuel pressure is too high, you can have hard starts. THis is especially true if the VP has some miles on it.

These trucks don't like fuel pressure up at 25psi on starting, they like it around 15pis. There was actually a TSB out on this that flashed the ECM to help with this. What it does is shorten the lift pump run time before you start the truck.
Before the flash, the lift pump would run 2 or 3 seconds before the wait to start light went out. After the flash, it's only a split second.
I had the same issues with hard starts and after the flash, problem solved, no more hard starts.
Downloading the smarty software will also program the ECM to give only the short lift pump run time. And once the smarty program is removed, the lift pump run time stays shortened so if you know anyone with a smarty, give it a shot. It's free and can help!

we have looked into everything with the fuel the truck has 0 psi if we unplug the lift pump we put on.. when we try to start the truck then it does the same thing.. i and believeing it is his vp.. but i dont know how to check and see if that is it.. i have noticed that if we unconnect the line on the pump and try to crank it without the lift pump there is no fuel.. but if we hook the lift pump back up if will shoot little fuel...

You can have the VP-44 bench tested at a bosch dealer.Cost about 100 bucks or so.http://bosch.kittelberger.net/bosch/...x.cfm?group=AF Go here and see if there is one near by.Love Carowinds park.

If you have 25lbs you should see fuel spraying everywhere and hard starts are dependant on when the pump comes on

yeah when i turn the pump on it will spray out of the vp.. with out the pump on no fuel..

Thats common, Bring the fuel pressure back to say 15-18 lbs (depending on the pump and the volume it produces). Some on this board say 20 and up is better. It's bull you can make the same amount of power with 15lbs as you can 25lbs. I would set at 18lbs and not let it go below 12lbs
