How much problems?
 

how well will a 2001 dodge cummins automatic transmission hold up to say 6ton of pulling about 40miles a week without giving any problems. a buddy of mine is looking to buy one and has always had a manual transmission. any feedback would be appreciated.

Pullin is no problem on them trannies until you start bombin em. They will hold their own under factory HP.

really depends on the miles on it and how it was treated before. But if he is getting it for a good price just put money away for a good built trans and when that one is done he will be ready. Before I got my truck it had already had the trans done at 90k and it was stock. But a lot has to do with how you drive them and maintain them.

Sure can't say your wrong about how it's been treated by the previous owner but this is the risk on any part of truck if your buyin used. But as a general rule the tranny is as dependable as the rest of truck as long as the truck hasn't had any power toys added to it or abused in the past.

They were good trannies for what they were intended for, they just weren't intended for twice the stock hp and torque that many of us are pushin through our trucks. Not that I would ever own one myself mind you, the handshaker is a personal preference for what I use a truck for.

I agree with what's mentioned above. A well kept auto should do the trick just fine for you. The second you start messing with it though (mine started to slip w/ just an edge) and you're gonna need to upgrade...if it means anything, i have a full built auto (billet everything) and i love it to death...if i could do it again though, id get a manual no questions asked...

ive got to disagree, i had a 98.5 with an auto, i hated towing with it, i bought it new, kept the fluid and filter changed religiously(about every time i changed my oil), it survived till i sold it but, for towing a 6 spd manual is king.
