2002 Dodge Cummins Wheel Bearings Installation - Videos and Photos

Going to have to replace my Front Passenger side wheel bearings

Signs they are going bad include: a hum or roar that can be stopped when turning the steering wheel in one direction but not the other
Thats me , Too bad these are over $300 :argh:

Dr. Evil 11-12-2008 01:36 PM

You will need the whole hub.

Start putting kroil on it now.

DB Admin 11-12-2008 02:11 PM

ok

Dr. Evil 11-12-2008 02:43 PM

There are 4 (12 point [15 mm deep] if I remember correctly) bolts that bolt the hub to the rotor - hit them with some penetrating oil.

Mr.Krabs 11-12-2008 03:26 PM

If yours are like mine were then don't forget the sledge hammer, and your lunch.
You can put pressure on the hub bearing from the rear by using a extension and socket and turning the steering wheel to wedge it,be careful, you can bend things....

Johnny Cetane 11-12-2008 03:44 PM

You might as well do your axle u-joints while you're in there.

Check your ball joints over REALLY good before you start too. Might need them.

DB Admin 11-12-2008 03:54 PM

Has new upper and lower MOOG ball joints already

Mr.Krabs 11-12-2008 04:01 PM

My front U-joints made it over 400k already, not sure why everything is lasting so good.:humm: might be cause I rarely use 4 wheel hop.

Not trying to hijack, but where the heck can a guy get a rebuild kit for the control arms?

06 DIESEL 11-12-2008 04:03 PM

Make sure that you have plenty of anti-sieze there, when you get it out clean up the hub really good and then coat it with anti-sieze on both the hub and the bearing. We had to use a 15# slide hammer on TJ's (getblown5.9) wheel bearings a while back and one came out after about an hour of working on it, the other seperated the bearing, not fun to get the other part of the bearing out.

Mr.Krabs 11-12-2008 04:06 PM

I'm thinking about making a "tool" (AKA big ass slide hammer) for bearing removal.

Dr. Evil 11-12-2008 05:19 PM

After 8 years of road salt we had to pound my rotors off with 4 pound hammers.

Not a fun job, i was too drunk to swing the hammer. So we let Leonard do it.

Dang I am concentrating hard in those pictures. :humm:

Mr.Krabs 11-12-2008 06:37 PM

I've heard of people just unbolting those things and taking them off, never seen it happen yet.

The first time I doubt it will just come off, if you use PLENTY of anti-sieze it will come out easily any other time it has to come out. Just remember if you are not silver you have not used enough. :w2:

DB Admin 11-12-2008 09:08 PM

this is going to suck

Dr. Evil 11-12-2008 09:14 PM

Its not too too bad - one thing, make sure you dont pull the axle shaft out too far, or you will knick the seal. Small knick is ok, it will likely seal. But a big one isnt good. Dont ask me how I know this. Also, the hub/rotor come off as one piece. Then seperate it after its off the truck.

What are ya complaining about???, its probably tshirt weather down there.

DB Admin 11-12-2008 09:23 PM

lol yeah right 49* right now

I had to change a wheel bearing yesterday morning in the yard outside a truck shop(they didn't have time to look at it till tomorrow and I wanted to go home) thankfully the last time it was out we put the antiseize to it and it almost fell out when I loosened the bolts off,I usually just loosen the bolts and find an old socket and ext. and beat them out from the back side ,when we finished changing it we went into the shop to find out how much we owed the guy for the use of a few tools and he offered me a full time job if i could change a front wheel bearing that quick (less than an hour):U:

Dr. Evil 11-28-2008 09:31 AM

Must be nice to have a garage...

Good job on the vid.

BTW, a claw hammer is for pounding nails...:w2:
