oil residue is probably from your oiled air filter. should never EVER run an oiled air filter on a turbocharged truck.

AFE makes dry filters. I believe jacob from DAP also carries the dry filters.
basically unlike the average turbo gasser, a turbo diesel makes a significantly greater amount of boost and sucks HARD on air filters...well lets use this as an example...what happens when you suck on a wet rag or towel? the water comes out! well same thing happens with oiled filters when enough suction is put on them...your turbo quite literally sucks the oil right out of the filter which gunks up the turbo compressor with oil and lets dirt through. http://a.cdnbrm.com/images/products/...nt_filters.jpg so you can use the same style filter, just don't want the oiled ones on a turbo diesel or any forced induction vehicle really.. |
I think what I can do is then. Take my filter off
clean it out really well. Then purchase a pre filter for it. I dont live in real dusty area. Also my truck is not a daily driver. |
amsoil makes a really good nano fiber filter that is dry from day one. We also have a pre filter that will keep all the big dirt and bugs out of your element. I let one get too full of oil from an oil leak once and collapsed it, but I let maintenance go for too long

Wondering if someone could tell me, If I set my dial indicator up on the shaft. How much play is acceptable? I can move quite a bit in my opinion. It seems to spin fine, with no interference. But I would like to double check before I decide not to rebuild just yet.

disassemble your charger. measure ID and OD of the bearings. compare those numbers to a new bearing. measure your turbine shaft. check your shaft for roundness. they normally are fine unless they have made contact. i believe the HY and HE351 use the same rebuild kit. there is an extra oil groove in the thrust bearing, possibly a little bit different alignment pin location as well compared to the hx30-40 kit. if its not puking oil than there is a very high likely hood that it is perfectly fine. with lots of shaft play comes worn piston rings and worn piston rings allow oil to pass by which gunks things up. so no gunk means good rings. good rings means no shaft play and no shaft play in that little bugger means run it harder you arn't trying hard enough. LOL hope that is what you are looking for. i think i have a set of STD he351 bearings laying under my bench. would you like me to measure them for you?
