I know of one truck here locally that just the lift pump circuit went bad in his ecm. Found out later that it is not a real common problem but that it does happen from time to time. Sounds like what you have going on.

The computers are on the firewall behind the air filter. One of them is the ecm. I don't recall which one though. Pretty easy to get to when you remove the filter housing. You can use an ecm from any 2nd gen but I'm not sure if you would need to get it reflashed. I know 3rd+ gens a new comp has to be flashed to the truck.
