Transfer Case

What transfer cases come on these trucks? The tag is missing on mine. Thanks

Should be a NP 205

Rusty89Cummins 11-28-2011 10:13 PM

yep and if its bolted to an auto tranny its got a 29 spline shaft and if its bolted to a getrag 5 speed then its got a 32 spline shaft.

Thanks Guys!

The reason I ask is because when I go to pull it down into 4H I get a grinding noise. Any ideas?

sweetv8s10 11-29-2011 03:08 PM

If it goes all the way in I wouldnt worry about it because its a gear driven transfercase so they grind a little sometimes or at least all of them I have ever had do and sometimes they whine a little running down the highway but I wouldnt worry about it to much.

kieron_kohlmann 11-29-2011 06:29 PM

No, I can't pull it in when its moving. If I'm stopped, it goes in just fine.

tower_ofpower 11-29-2011 07:28 PM

Hubs locked in? The NP 205 isn't a synchronized transfer case, unless the driven gear is spinning as fast as the drive gear it's going to grind.

If I remember correctly from last winter, I could pull it in anytime. Its a shift on the fly transfer case, so shouldn't i be able to?

jdbigblue12v 11-29-2011 11:59 PM

i have had the same problem with mine but only difference is mine doesnt like to come out of 4 low and is it something to take note of that when im driving my t-case chatters until i push the shifter forward and it stops? maybe low fluid?

tower_ofpower 11-30-2011 11:01 AM

I was under the impression that these weren't synchronized transfer cases, GM made a synchronized 205 briefly but ran into some sort of issue with them, only produced them for a year or two. Without the front end spinning you won't get the desired "shift on the fly" think of it as trying to rake your truck into first without pushing in the clutch. Hubs have to be locked, it's a gear driven transfer case. Can't cram two teeth into one groove lol, it's all gotta be spinning at the same speed. At low speeds can you pull it into gear with minimal grinding?

Nope, nothing at all. Only if it is completely stopped.

tower_ofpower 11-30-2011 12:30 PM

I'd double check that my hubs were locked and that both were fully engaged. have someone walk along side your truck see if everything is spinning. When you do pull it into 4 can you power brake it and break the rear end loose?

Ill throw her up in the air and check them by hand. So if i understand correctly, It will only allow me to engage while driving if both hubs are locked? Maybe I just never noticed it?

justanother92 11-30-2011 06:03 PM

Yes, If both hubs are for sure locked in then you should be able to shift between 2hi and 4hi at any time. Do your front tires have a noticably more tread than rear or visaversa? I have never heard of this causing problems but would make sense why you cant get into 4hi on the fly.

kieron_kohlmann 11-30-2011 07:15 PM

Yeah, I figured it out. I guess I had never tried putting it in 4 with out the hubs locked. With them locked it works fine. Its one of those things where in the winter, I leave them locked most of the time. Thanks Guys!

Rusty89Cummins 12-03-2011 08:06 PM

u think i would cause this problem if someone had one bad hub that wasnt locking in?

Yes, you'd have the same problem, one axleshaft spinning would only spin the spiders in the differential. Not the whole differential, meaning drive shaft is still sitting still and the gears won't mesh.

Hubs engaged......it will shift from 2H-4H or 4H-2H on the fly.
From 2H to 4L......it's easier to shut your truck off, shift, re-start your truck.
Have had a few NP205's.....they were all like this....
