Whats a better t-case setup?

ok guys here my situation. my np205 t-case is on its way out:argh:. im looking at buying an auto transmission and t-case out of a 96 cummins. would it be better to have my 205 rebuilt and use that with that transmission. or would it be better to use the t-case that originally goes with that transmision. And would that t-case work in the mean time with my 727 transmision to get me over for the winter? :humm: any help would be great. thank you.:tu:

the newer t case will have the front output on the wrong side. pre 94 was on the right 94 and up was on the left.......so your going to have to fix the 205

Besides being on the wrong side I personally think the 205 is stronger if they wernt people wouldnt call them bullitproof! :yeah:

you can get a chevy 205 for about a 100.00 the only difference is the input, if your input shaft is still good then put it in the chevy case the out put is the same. 205 uses a collar to adapt to different make tranies. thats what i did with my dodge 205. mine was an 84 chevy 205 and a 92 dodge 205. they are fairly simple inside, you could save a bundle in shop prices if you can do it your self...... I believe that the 96 dodge trany will bolt on also,(not sure though) the A518 can be converted to the 47RH and it bolts to the 205. you may need to use your old adapter. call goerend or suncoast they could explain it better. :choochoo::choochoo:

ya i forgot about the shaft coming out on the opposite side. ok thanks for the advice. i do know of a chevy 205 for sale for $100 so maybe i will pick that up for the mean time. whats the A518? a different tranny?

crewcab59 02-09-2011 07:05 PM

yes the a518 is an auto that came out with after the 727 the only difference is it has an overdrive.and then the 47rh. :choochoo::choochoo:

A 1996 automatic is computer controlled, aka, 47RE.
Dunno how you'll control it.

FYI, a 1988 through 1993 Dodge V-6 or V-8 truck used a PASSENGER'S side drop NP241D transfer case that "may" live for a short time behind a Cummins and an automatic.
They are pretty much overlooked as an option, but they share a LOT with the 1994-'97 241DLD transfer cases.

Mark.

Hold up make sure u know that the chevy np205 if it came behind a th350 or a sm465 they have smaller input shaft bearings there is a circle track 8 bolt pattern and the 6 bolt figure 8 patern but all are the same inside just different input shafts and input shaft bearing a np205 behind a th400 had the bigger front bearing but different input shaft but the th400 np205 came with a slip yoke so if I were u I would get the th350 or sm465 style put all the good parts in your cummins case use your input shaft and replace ur bearing and u should be good . Good luck oh btw google np205 and u will find out alot from the new process web site

Nixon- ya i was gunna ask about that cuz i remeber reading about the 47rh and re. kinda forgot about it when i came across the tranny. the thing is im in the process of restoring my truck and in about a month i should be ready to take my cab off. when i have it off i was going to have to take out the t-case and my tranny to fix my rear main seal, so i dont think i really wanna remove the t-case 2 times and potencially a third if i put it a np241D that i have. just to keep things easy i think im just gunna get my 205 rebuilt while i have it off to do my rear main and just keep my 727 tranny til it blows and then get a 47rh cuz itd be really nice to have overdrive :choochoo:.

cumminsblazer- i think i will do some more homework on google so i can maybe try and rebuid it myself.

oh and do you guys think its to much of a pain to do it myself since i havent worked on one before or would it be worth it to pay someone?

thanks for the help guys!!
