my truck is equiped with the spicer 70 w limited slip i know about the dana 70 but not the spicer tell me what you think:c:

Oh, sorry you didn't get it. Maybe this will help: The company has often been referred to as Dana-Spicer. And I don't think your axle was manufactured prior to 1928.

its an ok axle I guess, bout the same strength as a 14bolt gm axle im kinda down on it right now since I shredded my gears :( its locked so im sure that helped.

x2 i found it interesting, never hurts to learn new stuff, i knew they were the same company but the history was was new...personally i think that a dana 70 is a fine rear, the only down fall i have found is parts are a little harder to get then a dana 60, other then that seems to hold up fine

I always thought a 70 was tough as nails. On a gasser it is. I have blown 2 so far with a cummins twisting on it. They are weak with our torque.:td:

The pinion and side/spiders are the weak links. They are a fine gearset for up to a certain power level. Enough torque (?) or applied with high shock load will twist the pinion off. Worn Powerlok clutches is hard on the side gears. There is also a worn center pin issue, but I have not heard of that too much, probably ocurrs as a result of already starting to come apart in other ways.

With proper maintenance they will last forever driven sanely in a moderately powered 1stGen.

1 rear that blew was on my 89 that had 115 k miles and was pretty much stock. Under 220 hp. It was babied by the first owner so abuse was not an issue or high power. It even had the slip o matic stock converter. The other rear I blew was in a totally stock 89. Both trucks had the center pin oblong the carrier and grenade. Not really impressed. :dang:

been pulling and generally beating the hell out of my stock 70. Even broke an output shaft on the tranny. Rear is still original. I'm sure it will go any day now. :D

I'm guessing my 70 blew long ago because I blew my rear end 2 weeks ago, ordered new gears, went to put the new gears and realized there is a D60HD under my truck. Who put that there? :scare2: Time for a D80.

now thats a good rear!! i beat the ever loving crap out of my truck, no clutch flying burnouts or anything like that, i have no idea how much HP the truck makes, but it's been holding up really good so far
