looking at buying a 1990 Dodge

hello everyone. I have a couple of questions. I'm looking at a 1990, two-door I forgot to ask whether it was a manual or a automatic. The owner says that the only thing he knows of, that is wrong with it is, it is leaking diesel fuel, around the injector pump. He says, the bodies in good shape. The engine starts instantly, he claims to have kept up the oil and oil filter changes, and he claims there are no other problems that he knows of. I ask them about the interior, and he said, well. It's a 1990 so it may be a little rough. The guy has moved to Texas from Florida and his wife is staying behind to sell their home and other such things. He will be back, Thanksgiving and said I can come look at it this weekend. He seems motivated to sell. He's asking $900. I have a Mercedes diesel, and my wife has a VW diesel. So I'm very familiar with all the problems associated with diesels, but am not familiar with the Cummings engine and the Dodge, would appreciate any advice. Thanks Dave.:humm:

I would jump on it, if you can go buy a compression gauge and check the compression in each cylinder, if they are all the same, you are in good shape, if not, well rebuild time.
if you rebuild your self, it will cost around 1,500.00 or less.

Budgreen 11-25-2009 09:56 AM

for that price...... no way to pass it up even if it needs work you can still end up way out front

muskrat 11-25-2009 11:01 AM

Heck yeah, Grab it. Of course, you ask this question in a biased place. The truck could be posessed like Christine or something and all of us will be like," 900 bucks, hell yeah".- "But it kills people".- "So what, for 900 that's a deal, man". But seriously, I'd buy it, for under a grand you cant go wrong. Good luck.

ArizonaRedneck 11-25-2009 01:27 PM

sounds like a smoking deal to me:yeah::yeah:

seandonato73 11-25-2009 02:33 PM

grab that baby, most everything on a cummins like that is an easy fix, and $900 is a pritty god price too

dave1shere 11-26-2009 06:21 AM

I guess my main concern was, what can go wrong with this year model . What are the main things to look for when I go check this truck out. I seriously doubt that the owner would let me do a compression check over this holiday weekend, before he has to return to work in Texas. I know with my old Mercedes there are tricks you can do, such as looking for blow by out the oil fill cap. what kind of body issues such as rust or electrical problems, should I be checking out, this kind of thing. Again thanks for all of the quick responses. I guess, for that price just the Cummings 12 valve is worth it If it's in good shape.

My '90 had to be pulled out of a snow bank in the back 40 with a farm tractor, no reverse, u-joints falling right out of it, 4 different tires(that werent even included as part of the sale!) the dirtiest hack job wiring harness ive seen in years, no inside door panels, 395,000 km, and cigarette butts 2 inches deep all over the floor, for $2500, and up in this end of the world that was still a smokin' deal, the engines alone typically run 3-3.5.

so for $900 just go get it! worry about whats broke or gonna break, later! plenty of time for researching all sorts of stuff once its home!

For $900 I would even look past it killing a few people...

Never seen a used cummins engine go for 3-3.5 grand... Around 15 is more like it.

The rain gutter over teh windshield and teh floor boards are the two main hidden rust areas. These trucks are really basic, if it runs and drives its pretty much in good shape.

I WISH there was a deal like that around me! I'm searching for a nice D350 but they seem to be rare around Houston. Planning on just getting a D250 and swapping in a dually rear later on down the road, but the cheapest I've seen even for a first gen D250 is $2500. $900 is a heck of a deal.

Yoda47 11-30-2009 12:23 PM

I paid $2,500 for mine. I agree with everyone else, for $900, get it!

With diesels if it starts easy it's good to go.

CountryGirl91 11-30-2009 01:32 PM

Sounds like mine almost, except mine's a '92 flatbed that was $1,000. It runs real good and shifts perfectly (manual). My bf and dad said it's a real good deal for it's condition so that's why I got it. Mine leaks diesel when running (just like I bought it) but on mine, it's because of the pump. My dad and his dad used to work on diesel injectors, pumps, etc. for a living so I bought the parts to fix it and just need the time to do it.

This is the 91.5 I'm hoping to buy. It's a bit more than what y'all paid for your trucks but I'm happy with it :D
