Turbo and Injector Questions
I have a 91 I/C truck completely bone stock. I am looking to put a bigger turbo such as a Hx35 or Hx40. Just wanted some opinions on what would work better and what injectors would work best with each turbo. I'm am in the process of turning the pump up too.
|
If you don't have gauges, get then.
1st question is what do you plan to use the truck for, go fast or work hard. More fuel needs more air. Working that fuel even harder requires more air to keep the EGT down. Either turbo will support a 5X.010 effectively with mild pump tuning and is a decent all around compromise. |
My gauges are on their way. I'm looking to make some decent power with it. I was looking at getting 50hp Lucas Prince of Darkness injectors. Would I want to go with the Hx40 for them?
|
You do not want the Lucas POD's. They run hot and dirty. A set of Bosch +40s will run much cleaner and cooler with the same power.
|
What about schied injectors? Never heard anything good or bad about them.
|
I haven't heard anything bad about them. I don't pay a lot of attention to "the good", except when referring to service life. Too much commercializing or "i really don't have anything to compare it to".
There are excellent quality "cheap" injectors out there, even genuine Bosch. All depends on what you want (or can afford) to pay. |
I recommend ditching the 'xx hp' talk when it comes to cummins injectors. The combined area of the holes (number and size) is a better approximation of how much fuel they can deliver. IMO, Bosch 190's are small... barely worthy of a turbo upgrade.
I run 5x.012s in mine with an HX35, and have not maxed out my tuning yet. Normally can't get over 1000*, occasionally 1200* with some kind of load. FWIW, you need to step up to about 5x.016 (or larger) before you can run the 14mm pump rotor. Some injector sizes here: 1stGen.org • View topic - INJECTOR CHART |
Unfortunately, XX HP is how most sellers market their injectors and most other "high performance" parts. An arbitrary number to say the least, but it sells products. I would agree that decisions based on sizing would be better, however changes in manufacturing practices has also changed that "rule of thumb". A more accurate means would be based on how much fuel an injector can actually flow, as in pounds/liters per hour/minute.
I ran 5X.012 injectors made from the old "370 marine" nozzles and I ran a set of Bosch +40 injectors which also were 5X.012. The same label, Bosch +40 was also given to 4X.013 injectors. The Bosch "190" is a 5X.009. What HP you get out of any injector will be solely based on all fuel and air supporting factors. |

Flow rates are just as artificial because that depends on the injection pump and the rest of the fuel system. At least with a physical hole size dimension you can compare apples to apples. Saying X's stage 2 injectors make more power than Y's stage 3 injectors means almost nothing. |
the $600 scheid 40HP injectors are the SAME new ones we sell for $300 + core
We have better options for 5x.011 and 5x.012 that will be cleaner. Feel free to give us a call. |

If one were to do 5x0.12's would the h1c keep up? I have a newer, tight, wh1c, would the wh be an upgrade? I don't want to run an hx35 because of the higher boost at cruising speeds causing decreased mileage.
|
A stock H1C will support the 5X.012s good enough. Ran mine that way for years. A compressor side upgrade or an HX35 will help (more air). Don't know were you got the idea that higher boost at cruise equals decreased mileage from, in 15 years I've never seen it. And I've done a lot of towing based mods.
|
Well I have a hx35 # 2 fuel pin Hamilton, 3 piece manifold cam and should be getting my 5x12 s today so we will see how mine runs with them.. the stock intercooled ins suck..

I called DAP their non SAC 5x12's with a diamond eye 4" would be a good start I think. Does anyone know does diesel auto power's injectors come with the install kit or do you need to order that as well? |
diesel speed shop...dss has 5x12s on sale 450 ... just put them in mine and am please.. also no core.:c:

Also inter cooled trucks need a 145* angle, right? And what would be the correct washer thickness? |

I know we are knocking the xxhp talk but diesel speed shops 5x12's are 100 hp injectors..... Either they are dirty as hell or don't actually make that.... Novapat- seen better mileage, or just more get up and go?

Why go with another company when
1) Diesel Auto Power is a supporting vendor, 2) Our prices are better on most products 3) We have good quality control 4) Our injectors are EDM, then extrude honed to balance within about .03LPM with calibration fluid not air like most other places. we have 3 washer we can use if customer requests. |
