transmission identification
Hi guy just bought a 91 Cummins engine and transmission.. guy said it was a 518. I believe it is from what I looked up but it has the three wire prong . From what I read that didn't happen until second gen . Anybody. Know other wise? Also could it be a gas engine transmission?

Three wire prong is a 618 / 47rh trans. The 518 / 46rh trans is a 2 prong on the valve body
PM me the engine serial number and I can tell you if he told you the correct year |
Is the serial number on the timing cover? And is therea serial number on the transmission its self to identify it
|
There is a part number stamped in the transmission. Normally hard to read.
And yes the engine serial number is on the timing housing |
Engine number-44562155 or. Ref number 53007903-D Idk which one u need. And which number and where at is the one on the transmission
|
Engine was built Sept 1990. So it shouldn't be a lock up style trans. Measure how think the engine adapter plate is. They are thicker for the lock up converter
|
Looks like 2 1/2 inches
|
Not a 100% sure but I believe that is the adapter plate for the 618/47rh and nv4500 trans. I think the 46rh non lock up engine plate is only 1 3/4" thick.
|
Do you know if there is another way to verify that? And is the 47rh better or worse
