transmission identification

Hi guy just bought a 91 Cummins engine and transmission.. guy said it was a 518. I believe it is from what I looked up but it has the three wire prong . From what I read that didn't happen until second gen . Anybody. Know other wise? Also could it be a gas engine transmission?

BBD Tech Support 06-04-2013 03:17 PM

Three wire prong is a 618 / 47rh trans. The 518 / 46rh trans is a 2 prong on the valve body
PM me the engine serial number and I can tell you if he told you the correct year

twwtruck 06-05-2013 04:46 AM

Is the serial number on the timing cover? And is therea serial number on the transmission its self to identify it

BBD Tech Support 06-05-2013 10:34 AM

There is a part number stamped in the transmission. Normally hard to read.
And yes the engine serial number is on the timing housing

Engine number-44562155 or. Ref number 53007903-D Idk which one u need. And which number and where at is the one on the transmission

Engine was built Sept 1990. So it shouldn't be a lock up style trans. Measure how think the engine adapter plate is. They are thicker for the lock up converter

twwtruck 06-06-2013 01:35 PM

Looks like 2 1/2 inches

BBD Tech Support 06-06-2013 03:48 PM

Not a 100% sure but I believe that is the adapter plate for the 618/47rh and nv4500 trans. I think the 46rh non lock up engine plate is only 1 3/4" thick.

twwtruck 06-06-2013 04:32 PM

Do you know if there is another way to verify that? And is the 47rh better or worse

Found out its actually out of a 95

BBD Tech Support 06-07-2013 02:36 PM

You have a 618/47rh. Better than a 518/46rh. :jump:

twwtruck 06-07-2013 03:52 PM

He said its a 518 out of a 95. I looked on a site called fort dodge they said 518 did come with lock up Idk if that is true or not

BBD Tech Support 06-07-2013 04:17 PM

518 with lock up were only available with gas engines. The old gas trans will not bolt up to a diesel. The 518 for the cummins was a non lockup trans up to 93. In 94-95 618/47rh was a lock-up trans and in 96 they went to the 618/47RE trans

twwtruck 06-07-2013 04:29 PM

So this has to be a 618? Do they pretty much look the same? Or are they the same housing

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Will the nv4500 to ford np205 work on the 618 like it does the 518?

BBD Tech Support 06-07-2013 04:32 PM

yes they look the same. the oil passages are different and some internal parts

twwtruck 06-07-2013 04:41 PM

Ok good deal

---AutoMerged DoublePost---
