Need Help with steering please
While removing my steering box and bracket i noticed my bracket is cracked bad. someone has already tried to fix a previous crack in the bracket and there is a big nasty crack around the bottom bolt hole. I have called the closest dodge dealership and they said it has been discontinued. I can weld the crack myself but would rather buy a new one. I have ordered the ramcharger brace and am gonna install it along with new bracket. Does anyone know where to purchase one of these brackets? Please anyone with help please reply thanks

Hmmmm, I think that's gonna be a junkyard thing. Take a picture of it with you, I bet one off of a 1/2 or 3/4 ton would work. I think they same steering box.

Is it safe to weld these thangs back together? like i said someone already tried to weld the first crack looks like a stick bead probly 7018 but they did a crappy weld and a cant tell if it was just lack of experience stick welding or if the metal is some sort of alloy. Im guessin it is just mild steel.

being a 92 its probably mild steel and as long as all of the old weld is grinded out of there and its cleaned properly and you get a welder that knows what they are doing it will be safe. it has to be welded just right because if it is not it will become brittle and break easier. the best thing to do probably is to find a good fab shop that can remake the bracket for you out of a better quality steel

V it out and weld that bitch up. Look good at your frame too, sometimes there's stress cracks about the holes that need a little love, too....
If the frame has any cracks where the box bolts, I get new longer bolts and run a backup plate from 1/4 to 5/16's thick. That way, I never have to ever fix that again. |

Change to crossover steering, truck handles way better and the steering box moves back to the 2 wheel drive location and the bracket is not used.
If you don't want to do that then shoot me a PM with your address. I just put the crossover steering on mine 2 weeks ago and I think the bracket is still laying in the pile of parts that need to go to the trash. I'll give it to you if you want it, just pay shipping. It should fit in one of the USPS "if it fits, it ships" boxes that cost $12 or $13. |
