transmission 47re

My transmission goes from o/d to drive w a firm downshift and sometimes shifts back up into o/d and goes back and forth between gears.. but only happens when I let off the gas for an extended amount of time like down hill... any ideas?? Anything to be worried about its a new transmission....

Sounds to me like your TPS is crapping out, but someone who actually knows WTF they're talking about may chime in.

cummins3500 04-09-2012 07:03 PM

O boy isn't that like $200

JBearSVT 04-09-2012 07:53 PM

Depends on where you get it. Anywhere from $150-250 is normal. I'd make sure it's the problem first though. I had an issue that sounds the same, and cleared it up by following along with this little how to. Scroll down to "throttle position sensor adjustment and cleaning": Dodge diesel maintenance tips
If the TPS is bad and you're unable to dial it back in, you can delete it for about $40. I forget where, but I'll hunt around for it.

Thanks yea i need to figure this out I don't get it

Here's the delete I've found. There may be others, but this is the first one I came across:

For the money, IMO it's worth doing even if your TPS isn't screwed up, but that's just me. The school of thought "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is popular for good reason as well. I'd say test it and make sure it's your problem first either way though.

What does that wire kit do?

JBearSVT 04-10-2012 04:57 PM

It essentially replaces your throttle position sensor with a potentiometer, and gives you a control knob in the cabin to dial in your overdrive engagement to be where you want it. Since many shift issues are caused by a bad PTS, this can kill two birds with one stone. The adjustability is nice whether your PTS was working right or not, and eliminates it if is wasn't.

fyi the TPS is a potentiometer

JBearSVT 04-10-2012 05:04 PM

...which isn't manually adjustable, as apposed to the delete kit.
