Cummins 12 valve 1400° OUCH help!

I need some help, I just put a new stock turbo on my truck, and I noticed my egts have been god awfull high, they were fine with the old turbo. But I was doing a burnout today and I looked at the guage and it was pegged to 1400. It stayed ther for maybe 10 seconds, then I let off the trottle and it died. I couldnt get it to turn over. It sounded like it was semi-seized up, but I kept cranking the motor over, as it would spin then stop tgen spin again., I did this for 30 minutes at least. and as it was cranking over I could hardly touch the throttle and it would stop cranking all at once, so I had my buddy pull me back to the house, while I was being pulled I thought I would try to crank it one more time , (its auto trans so no pop start) and it fired up and runs fine. Im confused, and need ideas as to why it did this and why my egts are so high.

maybe the wastegate was open or a boot is leaking........................what kinna boost pressure was you showing at the time?

dieselpower91 07-28-2011 09:52 AM

i was around 20-25psi which is weird because my old stock turbo i could hit 35 no problem, i cant even see 30 psi on this one.

12vcummins96 07-28-2011 10:00 AM

somthing is wrong with that charger

dieselpower91 07-28-2011 10:18 AM

could a small leak or the wastegate not adjusted right be the problem?

12vcummins96 07-28-2011 11:08 AM

if your not getting the same amount of air in the motor then yes egts will be higher

does the truck have a TC lock up switch?

dieselpower91 07-28-2011 08:55 PM

no, i have just the overdrive that keeps it from shifting into fourth gear.
i have a triple disk converter idk if that has anything to do with it.??

Bought from where?

dieselpower91 07-29-2011 09:50 AM

ive got the star wheel turned up, it was turned all the way up when i got it, (not sure how to fine tune it)

will do, im going to check for leaks today.

zjohnsonua 07-29-2011 10:04 AM

I'm curious as to where you bought it, if you got your wastegate signal lines hooked up properly, and if your charge air lines are all tight.

dieselpower91 07-29-2011 10:34 AM

i went through holset to get it, they forwarded me to one of theyre reps im guessing and got it through them.

but im checking for leaks later.

does 1400 degreees on these motors have a bad effect? whats safe?

zjohnsonua 07-29-2011 11:23 AM

I'll leave it to some of the other guys here for confirmation, but it seems like 1200* is the ceiling for safety. Assuming the turbo has consistent boost behavior from when the truck has just been started and is cold through when it has warmed up I think you'll find a wastegate signal line issue. I'm not sure what year your truck is but it'll have either a WH1C or an HX35 and both of these are simple to diagnose. Apply ~30 psi of air to the wastegate and see how much travel you get. You should get 0.5 to 1.25 mm travel from the wastegate actuator rod. If it's in spec start checking the line that supplies the actuator.

go buy a good turbo don't waste your time with the stock one once you do mods the stock turbo is know good egts go nuts. as for 1400 i could hit 1600 very easy with my mods.

the safety zone is 1200 you shouldnt go past that or stay that high for to long

Lostnwalmart 07-29-2011 07:38 PM

Your engine will explode however at 1401 your good:tu:

Cliff... If your gonna give exact numbers with such serious results you need to be exact on your figures. Its 1401.2572... Jesus man

blazier18 07-29-2011 10:02 PM

a 60/65/14 would be nice with a set of 5x12's and a tuned afc and 181 dvs

dieselpower91 07-29-2011 11:21 PM

you mention 5x12s? im not real sure what that is? i know the delivery valves and turbo.

blazier18 07-29-2011 11:23 PM

its a 5 hole injector 90hp over stock but less egts and better fuel mileage (after u have fun) southerndieselx.com check it out

dieselpower91 07-29-2011 11:47 PM

alright great, thanks! do you have any turbo lag? what are you running?
