Cold Idle issues
 

my truck will not idle from cold, i.e I have to start it with my foot ot he throttle slightly to holdit at about 6-800rpm, i if hold it htere for say 20 seconds it will then sit a tad lower and idle a bit lumpy then come up to a good firm idle once warmed up a a little. Then it runs fine as long as i don't let off the power too quick for the first mile or so, if i do it dies. Once slightly warm it starts runs and idles fine.
I have found a cable that looks like it controls cold idle near the pump that is alway slack, loooks like it should hold the throttle open a fraction on cold starts but its not happening, how can i fix this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and its just a screw on the pump?

BTW its done this since i have had it and is not related to WMO use.

It does sound like your idle is too low. Idle adjustment is done with a screw on the back of the injection pump. Here's a good link.

Ram Diesel Problems

My truck does that too and so does every other diesel I know of. This is true for tractors and semi's too. The diesel engine isn't like the gas engine and that is why the vast majority of truck owners have a gas. They aren't smart enough to maintain a diesel and work one successfully. Just give it a little throttle when you start it and let it idle till the engine is warmer. You can't start a cold diesel and take off.

Ive been told that cold oil in the pump is what makes it not want to idle. The cold oil is thick and messes with the governor some how until the oil warms up. It could be true, my 1st gen doesn't do that because of the fuel lubed ip, but the 2nd gen does.:humm:

Well every other diesle i've had will start and run with no throttle needed, I thinky our a little off sayingit is righ thtat it should need some gas to stay running onthe first start up, its a right pain having to sit in it for 30 seconds to start warming it up.

Does it sound like this. Not my vid BTW. When its doing the hunting idle sometimes mine will act like what you described.

Nah, wish it did thats awesome! haha. it just wont idle, has to be held running onthe gas pedal at low revs for 20-30 secs then you lift off slow and it drops down to like 250rpm on ahunting sorta idle...give it afew minutes and it goes up to about 500 and runs like normal.

500 is too low warm. needs to be at least 700

Yeah I noticed that in the link posted earlier, wehys it need to be so high? once it is warm it doesn't seem to suffer from it.

It needs to be bumped up a little. Simple solution
